well i decided to rebuild my pc. I plan on getting a bigger hard drive mine now is only 20 gig:shock:. I also plan on getting more ram. i'm running 128 mb now:shock:. I also have plans for a custom clear case and neons. And a new on/off switch. I have ~$250. to spend.

My question is what size/brand hard drive do you guys like/run, And how much ram I should run or what I should shoot for. The case, neons, and switch will be "custom" so all I really would like to buy is a new hard drive and more ram. I will mostly use the pc for the internet.

If there is anything else i should think about upgrading while im at it then speak up, I want to build a decent pc but i don't want to spend my "crawler money" on stuff that won't be worth it.

Any help or opinions will be awesome. Thanks -Mike

With a 20g HDD, and only 128m of RAM.................how old of a CPU are we talking here?

Now that was worthless.

It started with windows 98, I just recently installed windows xp on it. I figure it's a 98 or 99.

it probably has a p2/3 in it!

Also if it is a brand name computer good luck getting parts for it!

IE: dell, hp, gateway,E machine

Its a Gateway. It came with windows 98, so i figure it's either a 98 or 99.

Western Digital Caviar RE WD1600YS 160GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive=$59.95
ram i would say at least 1g and i like gskill
case http://cgi.ebay.com/Transparent-Cle...ryZ80167QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem i know i will get yelled at for this but i hop it helps
and as far as a power supply i would say 450 or better and i like ultra

First real help so far. Thanks I will check that stuff out.

With that old of a machine, you are probably better off to start off from scratch. Your mobo is outdated, your CPU is outdated, EVERYTHING is outdated. It would be like sticking $250 into a Nylint......................oh wait.

Personally, I would look at a new barebones kit from tigerdirect or newegg. For $300-400, you won't end up with top of the line, but you will end up with 100x the computer you have now.

Now who would do that? I get what you're saying now, I planned on spending ~$250 anyways so i guess another $50 wouldn't hurt. Thanks man.

For about $300 you can build a failry decent PC on newegg.com... of you can spend ~$400 at Dell for a new PC with monitor and a warranty and not have to deal with building it.

Get on aim mike, i wanna talk to you about this. im wanting a computer myself....havnt had the money, but hopefully i can come up with it 8)

ohh, ok. just post up what your gunna get and if you like it, i will probly get one too:-P

I have to X2 on everything Robb said. If the PC is that old, your $250 is going to be best spent towards a new machine. A bigger drive isn't going to improve anything, and with a MoBo and processor that old, more RAM isn't going to make a huge difference with modern programs. Besides, it may only be rated for up to 512.
