Gen8 revival

Back in super early 2000 I picked up a Gen8 for my son who was 3 to drive. At that time he had been driving for a year and a half of various crawlers so this was nothing new to him. It was bashed hard and put away wet a lot of the time and the thing was a beast. I couldn’t tell you how many hours on it but likely more than any other I’ve had in a long time. With only a little bit of carnage, cvd housing, shock shaft bent 90*, blown out bearing exposed on the inside of the portal, and a busted body are really the only things I can think of. I took it out of service last year and stripped it all apart and sat in the tub till yesterday. I took out the ultra sonic cleaner and blasted the heater on it and ran for about an hour. Wiped and dried all of it up and put it back in the tub.

Thanks to @Jfrisch1 and making a pink crawler for his wife, mine mentioned how cool it would be to have another one and do something similar. She drives all the other cars we have but nothing dedicated for her. So this build goes for her, and I got to do some shopping.

Starting with the basics everything pretty much checked out. The center universal will be replaced not bad I’ve kept worse in service.

2 crunchy bearings so a full new set; I remember the days of trying to clean and service them but not anymore. Also added their steel transmission gearset. These things are no joke, I’m not fond of the rotational weight but whatever. I don’t really remembering why I ditched the originals but they must have been worse for wear.


As far as the rest goes for now…

A new spare HH trail master along with the 1080 that was in it will provide the power.
The shocks work but I found a cheap takeoff set of the GTS’s to provide the dampening.
The tires are the same kind and work really well where we drive, they are on some Amazon beadlocks.

I’m looking forward to seeing this revival! I may have went way over board on my wife’s, but I figured why not. I have 20+ and I wanted her to have the best. Just seeing her laugh and giggle when she was beating on that poor hardbody made it all worth it. Not even our kids could pry the remote out of her hand. Never thought she would enjoy them as much as I do.

It’s definitely a good decision to build your (or anyone else on here) wife a rig.

I can’t think of too much to really change with it. Its main use will be trailing, and a few hard lines. Like your G6 we normally go to PLBTF so she can wheel it there. We camp often and that’s where it will get the most use from it.

Now if I can find time for my other rigs to work on…

The set of GTS came in, got the links installed and the wheels mounted again so I guess it’s officially a roller now. I haven’t worked on a single car this much in a long time. Oh how I miss it…
FWIW the bottom shock eyes on the GTS fit the ball studs on the Redcat’s on the front. I had to shave a little from the axle housing between the double sheer mounting on the HD axles.

Also ordered a AGFRC A73BHLW V2 2025 Special Edition servo it was on sale and another 7% off from amazon, it should be here tomorrow.

AGFRC is good stuff. I wish more people would see the light. They are the OEM for a lot of the crawler boutique brands such as Reefs, etc without the markup.

I was looking through their stuff for options to use in the origin. Their website is terrible imo. If they make a strong low profile direct power servo, I couldn't find it. I was considering the A66FHLW, but I really don't want to deal with adding a bec.

I thought the A66FHLW was direct power as well, but I could be wrong. Agfrc Eric on FB is very helpful.

Yeah, it just doesn't look like they currently have a servo that matches the specs I want. The SA66BVMW is close, but not 4s capable and really not in the ballpark for power for the price (more of a high speed offering than max power). I picked up another rs700 from nsdrc.
