Blu-ray vs. HD DVD.

I am going to wait this out for a little while and see if anything major happens to set one apart from the other. However, if I was going to make a purchase right now, I'd go HD DVD. Many of the HD DVD discs will also play in a normal DVD player. BUT you should also probably check and see what format more of the movies you like are on.

I have a PlayStation3 and the BluRay movies are a whole different experience. i have not see a HD one but my guess is that they are similar. I believe BluRay will eventually capture the market. Just look what Disney chose for their movies. Get Cars in BluRay....you will love it!

BluRay discs costs more to make..it's a bit different and requires NEW EQUIPMENT to make the Blu-Ray discs.

If past format wars are an example, HD-DVD will win.

When Betamax and VHS squared off the porn industry went with VHS and that was the death blow to Betamax.

From the stuff I've read (been reading up on BluRay vs. Hd-DVD as well) the porn industry is going with HD-DVD.

Betamax and VHS were too different from the other. Since both digital formats in discussion are physically the same what could happen in the end is that both will survive and what will eventually fade are the machines made exclusively for one or the other. In other words a whole new batch of machines that play both could be in the future. Between porn and Disney I dont know which one moves more money but my guess is Disney. BluRay could be costly to make but technology gets cheap, fast.

but did betamax have the likes of sony pictures, fox studios, and Disney backing them? Not to under estimate the porn industry, but I would bank more on those big three over boogie down productions.

I have a Sony XBR 40" LCD already, and I am getting a HT-SS200 home theatre (which will work with either BR or HD) Question is, keep it all sony? that would be nice, but I dont wanna waste money doing it.

I couldn't agree more. HD will win. Sony tried the same thing with their BETAmax and they charged people to use their format. VHS was created and made not proprietary and look what won.

Mr. Pink: Sony made Blu-Ray hence their use of it on their PS3 and them not releasing a sinlge HD-DVD player. No one should also forget Laser-Disc a brain child of Sony.

Sony is also the company behind many wonderful copy right protection problems, some to the point they install Rootkits on your PC, nice Sony. Read on: http://www.boingboing.net/2005/11/14/sony-anticustomer-te.html

I will never support Sony, their products, and especially their technology. Even their Rootkit removal tool failed to remove all traces of the rootkit.

If you don't know what a Rootkit is, think of it as "Here's full rights and power over my PC"...these are things the black hat hackers use and go to jail for. Sony got away scott-free.

I just got a PS3...My thoughts are if Blu-ray does not catch on...I still have a killer game station.

On to Blu-Ray...it was an after thought for Sony...it was the PS3 and then BR. The graphics and pictures are unbelievable.

No the Blu-Ray technology goes back before they had the PS3 even near finished. Sony did think about using DVD and HD, but they decided to premier their Blu-Ray technology on their system, you know keep it all proprietary.

I still prefer my Microsoft Xbox360 for gaming over the PS3, but thats a simple win, Online game play managed by 1 central network and better game selection. We'll see how PS3 does now that Sony slashed their pricing to their proprietary game code in half to entice game developers.

From what I understand about Blu-ray to get the experience out of it you need a 7.1 surround system. That's from the guy's that I work with heck I still have a 27" CRT type TV in my livingroom.

All DVD's sound better with the best sound systems. Even game play is monumentally different.

Be cheap like me, get a 37" LCD and a 1080i Upconvert DVD...very nice.

Sure its not BR or HD-DVD, but until one wins for sure I'm not putting my money in either arena.

Honestly someone could even a make a 3rd, middle of the road price option with the best of both BR and HD-DVD...so at this point my money stays in my pocket...

+1 But what I was getting at they said the only way to tell the difference between Blu-ray and HDDVD was the 7.1 surround system. This coming from a buch of guys who deal with large A/V systems all day everyday.

No no no... Blu-Ray has the ability to support UP TO 7.1 surround sound. It's not a required item.

Yes and the newer HD-DVD players are coming with the decoder for the 7.1 Support. 7.1-13.1 is supposedly going to be supported by both BR and HD-DVD...problem is decoding using current systems.

13.1 ?! Thats just a little absurd. I can barely stand 8 speakers in a room, let alone 14.

In the MOVIE industry Sony>Microsoft. They are only competing head to head in the game console thing.

I was saying Microsoft has more $$ to throw at HD DVD than Sony for Blu Ray. Sony has had a few failed formats already. Hell, maybe while these 2 are duking it out another format will pop up and blow them both away.

And in the MUSIC industry, Sony>Apple, but how many Sony music players are running around compared to iPods?

In all honesty, I don't see the need for another movie disc format. Now that there are companies like NetFlix and even TiVo offering instant movie rentals over the internet, I'd be perfectly content with downloading all of my movies and saving them on a hard drive or something for one big movie database.
