After my local track shut down and there was no more SCT racing around me I decided to move in a different direction and try my hand at crawling. I did a bit of research and decided that the new Axial Bomber looked like it might be fun, and I have to say that I was correct, this thing has been a blast!
With that being said, just like racing SCT's, this is also proving to be a bit more expensive that I first envisioned. I have found that the more threads I read on here the more money I seem to spend..
So far it is set up with:
Futaba 4pk
Castle MMP/Tekin Pro4 3300kv on 3s
Castle 10amp BEC
SSD 2 speed trans
Spektrum DS821 shifting servo
14 tooth pinion / 64 tooth Robinson Racing Slipper
STRC Aluminum motor mount/cam
Hitec 7955tg steering servo
RC4WD steering links
Axial 13/43 diff gears F/R
Axial front Universals
Home made rear sway bar
RC4WD KC Hilights LED light bar
RC4WD LED light kit
Hobbyking BEC for lights, they are only rated to 7.4v
RCEXL Opti Kill switch for lights (had it sitting around from gas airplane)
Integy front servo mount
I made a CF equipment mount that goes on top of the reciever box out of what was left from the frame of one of my TRex 600n helicopters I had crashed many years ago. This just allowed me room for MMP, both BEC's, and a place to bundle the wiring.
Next Items will be:
F/R links and UCFab trailing arms
Beadlocks/Tires (not sure which ones yet, but looking)
C-Hubs/Knuckles
Beef Tubes
And I do not know what else. I have thought about changing out the axle housings, but it cost $12 to replace the Axial D60 plastic housing once I tear them up, and with Beef Tubes they should be plenty strong.
So far what has started out as a simple little build has rapidly snowballed, but it is fun. I need to decide on what tires to run, I'm leaning towards either PitBull RB II's or VooDoo U4's and maybe RC4WD Raceline Monster beadlocks.
One thing I do not understand is what foams to run. I am thinking Crawler Innovations Double Deuce but I do not know what outers to run, soft, medium or hard. And I have also read where people will run one density on the front axle and a different on the rear, just do not know why. I mainly do a trail and crawl mix, as such I want something descent at both and not super specialized.
Anyway, here is a little video I made running/busting some trails, no pics though as I am too new to have the ability. I have found a way to mount the GoPro Hero4 Silver inside the cab looking out through the roll cage, and that is with the driver and floor installed. It came out pretty well for the first try, next time I will rotate the camera up a bit more to get a little less hood and dash. Let me know what you think...
