A Capra build by B-MOW

I like the look of that. I need to pick up some of that Brass Black.

Yeah, I think it looks better too!"thumbsup"

That's some friggin' cool stuff. Decided to check it out, and discovered it's from a firearm refinishing supply manufacturer. They also make aluminum blackening liquid, as well as blueing liquid. Just ordered the Brass Black, and Aluminum Black (even Walmart carries it).

This stuff works good. It just takes several layers of it to make it dark. I only did two layers, but I could have put on more.

I didn't realize they made it for alum too! I did get mine from Walmart.

I definitely prefer the non-brass look. That’s one of the reasons I went with Samix for the TRX. Looks great Brian. I’ll be doing the same. I’m also going to borrow your Lego netting idea! Two thumbs up on this whole build!"thumbsup""thumbsup"

I agree!"thumbsup" And that is why I went with Samix on my TRX-4 also.

Thanks man! I say go for the Lego netting! It definitely looks better with it!:)

Hey, what’s the purpose of the 3x5x0.1mm MST shims? I read the SVT thread and saw the 5x7 shimming for the idler. But the 3x5 has eluded me

Actually, the 3x5 MST shims are for the idler in the trans. The 5x7 shims are for shimming the pinion shaft in the diff where the driveshaft attaches.

Ah! Thanks for the clarification.

So you tossed a couple sims on the pinion shaft to stand it off from the internal bearing a bit and keep it from wandering? Good to know.

My kit's on the way. It'll be a slow build as I fiddle with stuff. Your, SVT and some other threads have been handy for figuring out where early tweaking/adjustments are needed or handy

Always easier to deal with stuff like shimming early on vs the Assemble-
disassemble - reassemble cycle.

Your welcome!"thumbsup"

Yeah, thanks to SVT for recommending the shims, they work great!

Yeah, it helps out a lot having build threads here on RCC to look back on to help solve issues along the way. Build threads by others have helped me out quite a few times in the past with my builds.

Brass Black... I'm going to need some of that!

"thumbsup" Yeah, it's good stuff! I've used it a few other times in the past.

Some new parts from SuperShafty arrived yesterday.

Hoping to get them installed tonight.

Happy New Year to all here on RCC!:)

Got my upper bracket the other day, and OD gears should arrive today! And I figured out they are based in my region, so I might be able to do their 2020 event.

Also got some of the brass portal covers and AL trans case for the kit build i'm... um... building.

Received mine yesterday, as well...but won't get to install them until tomorrow. Today, I'm moving onto "step 2" of my 2nd Rustler 4x4 conversion (yesterday, I built the new shocks, disassembled the vehicle, did some test-fitting of other parts, and dyed the chassis black).

I was also thinking about attending their Fall Crawl 2020 this year. It's roughly 4 hours away. Look like this year may have less snow!:)

You sound like your in the same boat as me! Too many projects going on at the same time!:)

The OD is pretty drastic, it should really pull well. I installed mine yesterday and took out the diff OD I had in there. Can’t wait to try it out. Little visual of the difference between wheel speeds here

Have you gotten any wheel time in with the goat yet B?

Wow, that does give it a lot of OD! I think it should work well.

I am ashamed to say that the Capra still has not seen any wheel time yet!

Between little time and sh!tty weather, the first run has been put on hold! It seems like when I finally get time to take it out, the damn weather goes to sh!t! I haven't felt like taking it out in the snow or mud. I really would like a nice dry and (warmer) day to get a good feel on how it drives. I may get a chance sometime in 2020!:lmao:

Yea, tell me about it. While the 1st Capra is finally finished (at least I hope it's finished), I will have to open the trans once more. Somehow, the slipper pad moved, so gonna use a tiny drop of CA at 3 of the 6 corners, to held the pad in place. Then there's the TK that's about 80% done (need ESC, body, wheels, tires, bumpers, and probably a change in sliders. I'm also finishing up one Rustler 4x4 project, and approx 30% their a separate Rustler 4x4 project. Finally, there's the TF2, which hasn't been started, to be followed by the 2ns Capra, plus the HMMWV project I'm researching.

While I've gotten mine out for a few somewhat-short test runs, like you (due to work & weather), I have yet to fully test it...especially now that the OD gears are in.

I have tomorrow off (so far...tho, in my line of work, that could change), and plan to spend a good part of the day working on the other vehicles, plus replacing the matter bathroom sink faucet...but, if I can 'find' any "free time", I'm thinking about heading over to Linda Vista Park (Cupertino, CA), which is where RC Review does their YouTube videos). Knowing my Imperial Capra is more top-heavy that other peoples (Stormtroopers aren't exactly 'light'), I certainly don't expect it to make it up certain lines (the 2nd Capra should be able to), but I'm interested in finding out whatever it actually can do.

I suggest praying to the weather god...and, if that doesn't work, you might consider taking over the garage, and building an indoor crawling course. [emoji16][emoji1690]

Man... I can't believe I missed the availability of the OD gears the first round. I can't wait to see what you think of them. I was planning to put the Boom Racing SCX10.2 OD in like Topher, but now I might just wait for the next batch of gears.

I'm waiting for the standard ratio to come out for the rear. Sounds like a few have busted the small portal gear.

Yeah, I got lucky and was able to get on the first round of pre-orders.

That's odd. The new small gear has a larger diameter and looks beefier than the stock gear. I'll have to keep an eye on it."thumbsup"

Finally got a chance to roll the Capra into the shop to get the SuperShafty rear link riser and the Team Garage Hack OD front portal gears installed.

IMG_4756.jpg

Rear link riser installed. I had a little trouble fitting the riser in place so that the mounting holes would line up. I ended up trimming a tiny bit of plastic off of the strut on top of the axle. Also had to ream out the holes with a round file so the the riser would slide into the holes. After a little modification, the riser slid right in and bolted up.

I went with mounting the links to the bottom hole to start out. I initially had the links in the top hole (as pictured), but when I cycled the suspension, it felt like there was a slight bind. By dropping the links back down to the bottom hole, the suspension feels free and smooth.

IMG_4757.jpg

Next up was the TGH OD gears. Here they are laid out beside the stock gears. These new gears are machined very nice and look to be beefier than the stock gears.

IMG_4758.jpg

And here is a look at the new gears installed. They slid right on and fit very well.

IMG_4759.jpg

Regreased the gears and slid the brass portal cover back on. Gave it a quick run around the shop floor and it works great!

Now just waiting on the weather here to cooperate so I can get the Capra outside to see some real dirt and rocks!

I know the feeling. Since installing both on mine, either my work schedule and/or the weather hasn't been cooperating...well, technically, that, plus the other vehicle I'm working on, "Project Predator".

I hear ya! When I finally have some time, the weather sucks or when the weather is decent, I'm busy being an adult!

Nice! What’s the advantage of the link riser? I feel you on the weather front. It’s been pretty wet/nasty here. I gave up and went for a crawl last Saturday which resulted into brand new Capra being coated in mud. She ain’t new no more...

Thanks!"thumbsup"

From what I hear, the link riser is supposed to help keep the front end planted on uphill climbs and keep the rig from tipping over backwards. I haven't tried it out yet, so we will see!

Well, we here went from rain and mud to the frozen tundra! So it looks like my Capra will be sitting pretty on the shelf until further notice!:ror:

Wow, it’s been so long, I forgot my Capra had a build thread!😂

Sadly this rig only saw one rock about 5 years ago and then got dismantled to be a donor for other builds. With the release of the Vanquish H10 Optic and my current Optic build, I’ve suddenly got the urge to reassemble the old Capra.

The plan is to replace the horrible transmission and skid with something better with the appropriate gearing to slow crawl rocks like it was supposed to be meant to do.

Luckily the stock Capra axles only found their way to another build, but never got ran. They are still shiny new and somewhat rock rashless!

This is where the axles end up. A GSpeed build with a TGH 2Low trans sporting a Creep cab. Built this about 3 years ago and collected dust on the shelf ever since.

As she sits now. Purchased a Delrin flat skid and cheapy LCG gearbox trans off the Amazon. Also picked up the West Desert Wheeler micro winch mount that bolts into the chassis right in front of the battery tray. Gonna use it as a suck down winch. First time trying one of these, so we’ll see how that goes.
