I'm in desperate need of a computer for school, my 10 year old lap top just isn't cutting it any more. The student versions of the software I need to learn calls for an i7 chip, 3 GHz min., dedicated RAM for a graphics card, windows 7 64 bit, big hard drive space, ect....
As I went to HP and Toshibas website to build a custom unit, the prices were around $2K,much much more than I can spend right now. I figured that I could do with a desk top instead, the prices were a little better coming in around $1200-$1500. When I was at class on Friday I looked at what was being used, and it was an HP Z400 work station. I checked around for new units, they started around $4500
So I decided to look at used units. It seems to be a endless supply of these things on the used market with chip sets anywhere from 2.2 GHz to 3.2Ghz. The prices are in the $350 - $500 range, much better for my budget.
My questions are- why are so many of these things available? I understand that a lot of them are lease turn ins but are there other reasons that there are so many of them? If I go this route, I basically don't want to get stuck with something that has an outdated component that is stupidly expensive to upgrade/replace.
Has anyone else done something similar with good or bad results to what I'm thinking about doing? Has anyone been using a Z400 for a long term? Pros/cons to the unit?
Thanks for any helps!
