new to crawling, have been into rc for 15 years. why or what is a bec used for? and do i need to run one in my xr10?

A bec is used to bypass the built in bec in an esc or to provide direct power to a servo. Most people would recommend them for any scaler or crawler.

In crawlers there is a huge demand put on some of the electronics. Where the tires that are very large compared to many rc's are turned, it puts a huge strain on the steering servo. That can draw a lot of power from the esc which routes power through the radio receiver to the servo(s). Esc's have a built in bec which converts the battery power of usually 7.2 or 7.4 volts 9often higher with 3s, 4s liops or 7 or 8 cell NIMH's. It has to reduce that voltage down to usually 6 volts. And that internal bec is often limited to only allowing about 3 amps at 6 volts. There are some escs that alow more but not too common. Some escs give even less power then that. So then you have the servo pulling a ton of juice and it can cause the esc to shut down, glitch or even on occasion go POOF!. An external BEC like the Castle Creations one (they actually make a few models) the common one supplies 10 amps and programmable voltage. So the ESC does not have to do the work running the servos. And the servos are happier because the have more and optimum power. Its kind of like in car audio where pwople with large systems often have to add larger batteries or more powerful alternators. With the stock stuff you see the headlights dimming as the car has nothing left as the radio system is taking it all. Same in the rc, the servo hogs all the juice and the rest suffer. That is a vague simile but maybe you will get the idea. They cost around $25 for the Castle BEC and need to be soldered into the wiring. There are many threads on here about how to install them depending on the electronics you have and their configuration.

Hope that helps a bit and good luck!"thumbsup"

Thanks for the help, makes sense. Quite different going from 1/10 scale racing.

bumping an old-ish thread. but i have a ace rc bec on one of my nitro cars that are no longer in service, can i use it on my crawler?

You can use the ace BEC on your crawler.
Your ESC probably has a built in BEC. In that case it needs to be disabled. You can do this by using a small screw driver to pry the red wire out of the plug that goes to the receiver. Tape or heatshrink it back in case you ever need it.

Your ace BEC may not be that good. Look up the specs on it and look up the specs on your built in BEC.

The majority of people run the Castle Creations BEC. Its great quality, has adjustable output voltage for overpowering your servos, has a high amp rating so it will power multiple servos, and its an amazing price.
