I have a cr-01 on the way and am debating what powerplant to run.. I was thinking maybe the rooster crawler combo with the novak 55t.. Is that an ok setup? I wont be hardcore crawling.. just light stuff with a pretty stock stuck.. and some trail rigging..

Best motor/esc combo?

That combo is exactly what I'm running in mine and I can't complain. It's not fast by any means. Looks like about 7mph is tops. So if your looking for a bit more speed a lower turn motor or maybe a different pinion might help. The controller though is A1.

Im running the rooster crawler and integy 55t with standard 20 t pinion,goes well.I was useing the standard 27 t motor with a 18t pinion,nice and fast ,and could still crawl,but not as smooth at low speed.

I recommend the Tekin FX-R. Very small footprint. Very good drag brake. VERY smooth! Will handle 3s Lipos. Very easy to program and can with a addon program it on the PC.

Rock Crawler
I am running the stock motor now but will be changing to a 35 turn as soon as my parts arrive.... I wanted a bit more torque and did not want to sacrifice the speed much....
The Rooster Crawler is an excellent esc....Will be upgrading to that too....Now where is that UPS man ?????

I just picked up a CR-01 as well. Its pretty much done, just waiting on my Rooster Crawler from Tower (should be today according to UPS) and to throw a coat of paint on the shell. It will be with the stock silvercan, I don't have any experience with this combination so I'll let you know. I don't expect it to rip, but that not why I got this rig anyways.
Mine had the stock motor and a Viper Eco-20 ESC for a couple of weeks, but those are now in my sister's car. It was an OK setup, but the ESC really wasn't designed for low speed applications, and the maximum speed of the car was enough to roll it when it cornered on flat ground.
My CR-01 now has a Goat ESC and Crawler 18.5 motor, but I also put a 16T pinion on it. The wheelspeed is exactly what I wanted, the low speed control is great (the smaller pinion also helped that, compared to the standard 20T on the same system). No more flat rolls, although that could also be the huge amounts of solder wrapped around the rims.
I know I'm asking for trouble packing that much oomph inside a car that is mostly plastic, but my idea is to replace broken parts with metal ones as I go.

OK so I got to use the stock silvercan and Rooster Crawler and it seem to work just fine for me. Went for a walk through the woods and in some rocky areas today. Good fun
I think I decided on this.. well I dont think.. I ordered it.. so for now I will be running:

Sorry to pitch in so late, i would have said the Novak goat system, it has the smoothness of a brushed and the power and wheelspeed only brushless can give you, i have one on my cr-01 and i love it.
