Brazing Video

they are all that color coated now....once i have the pieces cut to size i chuck it in my drill and use plumbers sanding cloth to take it down to bare metal....then after that is done i sand it by hand from end to end with the cloth again....plumbers sanding cloth is like window screen with grit.............bob

....

1st thing i thought of when he dropped the piece he worked on, a bucket of water to drop it into to allow it to cool off.

other then that, now i can attempt to braze, cuz i never knew?

thanks for the Vid man!! "thumbsup""thumbsup"

Maybe it is the flux?? I just bought the cheap burnzomatic flux, because my local linweld didn't have the harris flux.

So far i am having better luck just using brazing rod. Sould i go for the harris flux?

I've looked into this, but it seems in the UK our automotive brake line is copper or cupro-nickel whatever that is!). Am I right in thinking US brake line is steel and 1/4"?

You can solder zinc, so maybe you can solder zinc coated brake lines. If you get high quality solder like Bridgit, it should make fairly solid connections.

If for some strange reason you grab a spot you just brazed before it cooled, run to the kitchen as fast as possible and get an ice cube from the freezer and hold it between the fingers you just used to grab the hot joint with till it's completely melted.. It will remove the heat that causes your finger tips to blister.

Warning: Teenage UK resident (useless with imperial so this wont be :)

im planning on bulding a super crawler with alum or steal tube (like from homebase) 6-8mm. which would be best 2 use and ive got an electric heat gun thats about 560oC. will that be hot enough?

I just created a .pdf file with all of the information on this thread that I found useful - or could find useful later. It's probably easier than going through all seven (?) pages. If anyone else wants to read it, then please tell me how to post a .pdf I'll post it or post a link to it. Photobucket doesn't allow .pdf files to be uploaded - where can I put a .pdf file so others can see it?

Thanks,

AR

Hello...
Newcomer and looking forward to learn many things from you guys.
So, my first question is... what's the propper "to buy" list for a rookie like me to start making stuff ? The material I'll be working on will be aluminum and steel. Links would be very helpfull... I'm more like visual (if this is the right word), than reading...:)
Thank you in advance.

PS.Found this video on youtube.... thought I'd post it here...

great vids!"thumbsup"

Adding to the supply list, I'd recommend the following:

Hand files - small round, triangle files (Dremel's are great but there's always something more/better/easier you can do by hand)

Metal clamps - remove the rubber tips:

One or more of these:

Sorry if this has already been asked, but while brazing do you keep the two rods that you want to braze slightly apart so the flux and silver can get through to the other side or do you just let them touch?

Let them touch. A slight beveling on the edges helps the braze flow into the joint but it is not totally needed.

I have never had any luck using the above items, I mainly use blue painters tape to hold pieces in place- quick and simple.

p!nK

on ebay they sell brake line that doesnt look color coated!!!! (it says zinc coated)
yall let me know if yall find it.
also brake line bends easly but what about aluminum rod?
