Brushless 1/8 Scale Buggy

Most of the guys that I talked to were running Mamba Max with holes drilled in them and a fan (or two) for cooling. The motors were varied.

I know that there was at least one of the prototype Novak systems there. He wasn't running as many cells as the others (some just wanted to go fast down the straight) and he actually looked better than most.

They ran 5 minute quals and that class only ran a 10 minute main. It was only an exhibition class. They all claimed they could go 20 pretty easily.
 
Yeah, Mamba Max w/ 4s lipo seems to be the most commonly used set up.

Motors vary between Neu, Mega, Lehner, Plettenberg, Feigao, Hacker, Nemesis and a few others.

I'm looking at getting the Neu 1512 2.5d/f Sensorless Brushless Motor on my RC8.

Cool, just answered my PM to you. That seems like a good motor to get, especially if you can run 4s. So you're going to use a mamba maxx?

I would love to have a good monster maxx this year too. That schultze esc I have is old and beat up and still sells used for $250+. I've had people outright offer me $250 when I post pics of my Revo. I'm not even selling the damn thing.

The MM w/ a small fan and 4S seems to be pretty reliable. If the MMM comes out soon, the MM will go in a B4 for my son, and the MMM will go into the RC8.

Castle just released their latest update for the MM and those who have tried it are really giving it great reviews.

I ran my emaxx with a feigao 8xl at the farm with the MM the other day, ESC never got over 100F at ambient 35F, motor was about the same. It was powered by a 4s2P 10C 8000 polyRC pack. It used a mere 2.5 amp hours for a 50 minute bash session. The dog did interrupt a lot of the bashing, but the MM pushed the rig to about 35 with no sweat. I need better batteries for more speed and punch, some new ones are on the way for more testing.
 
Another Castle e-mail:

Expected release date is late Feb/early March. It'll handle up to 6s
lipo and 200A continuous...motors will be licensed from Steve Neu
(arguably the best motors in the world)...total cost of the package will
probably be around $300. We're seeing speeds of 60mph+ in our Emaxx's
and 1/8th buggies and we're not even trying yet.

On my BL Savage I am running a Feigao 10XL with an MGM 160A 18cell ESC with 5s LiPo. Due to the weight of it I needed the 10xl.

I just couldn't wait for the MMM... I will definitely find a home for one in one of the rigs in my shop...

Had to go with a 10XL? Crap... I just bought a 8XL today for my Savage brushless project using the FLM conversion. BUt only going to be using a 4s 8000mah pack insead of a 5s pack. So maybe that is ok than, using a 8XL instead of a 10XL. Or is the 8XL not going to be enough to move the heavy Savage?

You might not have enough torque to get it moving. Plus it is going to run hot...I was actually going to an 11xl but opted for the 10xl. I first bought a 9L and it was rough on it. The 10XL was right were the RPMs needed to be. I am guessing you went onto rc-monster...there is a calculator on there that answers all your questions. You may want to look at that before the order goes through...and believe me...Mike ships fast...I bet it goes out tomorrow.

Email him and ask him what he thinks and check out the calculator...

If he opts for lipo batteries he won't need to use such a low turn. I have an 8xl in my emaxx that scoots pretty good. The savage is a bit heavier, but on 18 cell nimh you have to use a higher turn motor to account for the extra battery heft.

You should be fine with 4s on the 8xl if you keep an eye on gearing and heat at first.

Consider yourself added. :) The Monster Max should be available in March by best estimates. We're waiting on the things that are out of our hands right now. Motors, cases, boxes, manuals, etc. It'll be able to handle up to 6s lipo and 200A continuous. It'll also have our Castle BEC switching regulator integrated into the controller so you'll be able to dial your output voltage to your servo(s) to anything you want between 4.8v and 9v in 0.1v increments. The motors we've licensed from Steve Neu (arguably the best motors in the world). Total cost of the combo should be around $300. I'll add you to the email list...when it's released you'll get an email from me.

Wow, that MMM is going to be a new favorite of mine. That's cool that they built in all those features.

Thanks to a post JRH made on another forum, I bought a pretty cool new toy: an Eagly Tree Logger.

I ran it on my Feigao 8XL, Schulze esc (18.97kv? I think), TrueRC 5S lipos (only 10C though, which sucks for this setup).

I have a couple of other batteries on the way and a 10XL, so I can test them out.

These were my readings on a not-so-charged TrueRC pack.

As you can see, it is amazingly useful for figuring out what is going on in these high power applications. I'm going to have to run it on the crawlers to see what they actually draw on those packs I have. That will be real interesting to see what those bound up situations really mean.

Edit: You know. I think I'm going to throw some of my NiMH packs on there and see what that data looks like tomorrow. I have a couple of 8 cell packs I can zip tie in and run around.
