Hey everyone, first post. I was watching Xtreme 4x4 on TV and saw the show on RC Rock Crawling. I want to get into it but dont have a lot of cash. I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice on where to start. I want something I can upgrade, I dont want many plastic parts. I want it to work well. Where should I start? Is 400$ an OK starting point?

axial RTC is a good start, comes RTR is 1/10th which isnt as limeted as the losi mini rock crawler to where u can play. TONS of aftermarket support for axial and they are durable and simple

like the posts above said, ax10 rtr, thats what i first got, great truck, i upgraded it and now it is an amazing crawler. or Losi comp crawler? (have to buy and install your own electronics though)

good luck

if you got 400 to work with your good to go.
shop used.
you may find a used berg for just a little more with a radio
my best advice/be patient,dont rush
study your area, see what groups are around that crawl and go check out what they are driving.
buy used/you get much more for your money, especially right now in this economy.
pay your 20 bucks to get your star and start looking in the for sale section
right now there is a losi comp crawler with quality electronics for 350
all you need is a radio.

now if you look at a rtr remember this. you are buying crapy electronics that will soon need to be replaced. crapy links as well.

losi comp crawler is a fair truck
axial has more parts
losi has front and rear dig
axial comes with neither, but if you buy used it should have dig, just not front and rear
losi can go moa
axial as of yet cant

now berg is the way to go.
a berg is tougher, and has a lower center of gravity
and its dig performs better
costs less in long run to buid/maintain

everyone has thier opinion/preference,do some reading this site has loads of info

read the axial thread and then the berg thread
you will find lots of info on both rigs and can then better compare.

good luck,and have fun

If you are just looking for something to start with, the Night Crawler would also be a good pick. Plastic parts are not always bad. You said you would upgrade it eventually. Just another option to consider. I got the LCC and have almost dumped 1K into it. Ouch! I should have got the NC myself.

Rock hard is right buy used !!!!!!!!!!!!! e bay or on this sight $400 could get you ready to comp if you buy right good luck !

Hello,
i think you'll have to wonder what you really want before you buy something.
- do you prefer a real crawler and climb insane rocks (for it's scale) and have a rig that doesn't look like a real car?
or
- do you prefer a realistic car that you'll equip with scale accessories to make it as you like, but wich can go only on small rocks and makes you happy just looking at it driving as a real car?

An other question is, did you practice radio control before this one and are you prepared to assemble it and put the electronics inside by yourself, or do you prefer to have a ready to go, and doing some modifications after?

I've done sailboats and helicopters, I dont mind building it. I'd like it to be a realistic scale model that can handle rocks and water and mud and stuff, nothing out of controll. Not a comp truck.

What you be looking for is the Axial SCX-10 which comes in kit version or you can get the "TR" version which comes with a much better looking body, bumpers, rocker guards, rollcage. Only problem is that it's an RTR... I'm not into RTRs mainly because the electronics you get are barely adequate.

Kit:

RTR:

Keep in mind that you could get the kit, and get all the cool scale accessories later since everything is interchangeable.
