Codyboys SV4-10 "Making it my own"

Looking great and loving the metalwork.
Starting off down that route myself shortly when I decide if I should buy an adjustable torch with hose or go 'cheap' with a small bottle and fixed torch to start me off to see if I like it, or importantly any good at it!

Excellent cage work you have there sir.

I have soldered up a few metal bits before and getting 1 piece together isn't bad, making a second that matches is always my problem. All the symmetry going on in that cage is subtle brilliance. "thumbsup"

I agree with osrc n animal, i looks great n wouldnt change a thing. The truck looks amazing Ernie! Keep up the great work

I can't really tell from the photo's, possibly due to the way you've cleaned all your joints. Curious if you're brazing that Cage together? Love how clean it all is.

If it's not brazing, What solder are ya using?

Amazing work Bud, So straight and tidy.

Lastly. I know that little voice! He mess with your head too huh? Any tips on how ya shut him up? haha In all seriousness though, keep up the amazing work.
Hope to get my hands on a vs410 someday.. Loving what your doing with yours.

Love the cage and the paint, always eye popping designs from you! Amazing work.

Are you going to try to close the gap at all between the rear bumper and the body? I had a hard time getting it to sit flush myself.

That cage is awesome. I love the rootbeer color choice too. I am suddenly getting the feeling that I want one of these trucks more and more. I might have some spare parts that would be nice to have a home for too..... will you put a winch up front?

Thanks for the comps! Be sure when you decide to buy some type of a torch that it will get hot enough to braze/solder your tube/rod. I use a acetylene set up that self feeds oxygen through the handle and is a single gage/line to do all my soldering. Just a regular propane feed torch will not work. "thumbsup" I can post photos if you need. ;-)

Very nice work as always! I think the cage looks great as-is. Wouldn't change a thing
:lmao: To late, but it was just a small addition. :)

Thanks, practice, practice, practice and then a little more practice!! And I've made many mistakes along the way. Some of them I can hide pretty good.:mrgreen::mrgreen: I'm really looking forward to your package! "thumbsup"
Ernie

Amazing work as usual Ernie! That cage looks great! Hope one day I can get on your level. I wouldn't change a thing. Love watching your builds!

Thank you young man. I think you are probably closer than you think! So don't sell yourself short ;-) I just have a few more tools than you do. "thumbsup"

It is getting there, I don't work in the shop for as many hours as I use to. 8)

Technically it's brazing, but is just like silver soldering. I use Safety Silv 56 1/16th wire. And I've only touched up a couple of the joints. It just flows so nice.
And thanks for the kind words! ;-)
So...….I have made this offer many times before but you may just be close enough to my shop to take me up on it. (40 miles?) If you like I will mentor, teach, or work with you some projects. Or just come up and we can try to solve all the world problems . You already have a great start with the truck you're working on. "thumbsup" Your welcome to use anything you'd like in my shop. ;-)

Thanks young man, glad you are liking. ;-) I haven't even thought about that gap yet.

My favorite go to color right now! "Build it and they will come". I know the kit is high dollar but is so much fun to build. The only problem I have encountered is a twisted off screw in the rear locker. I needed to re-tap the hole to get the other screws to go in smoothly. ;-) Good thing it started with 6 holes.
I do intend on building a winch for it. "thumbsup"

Love this build. Also love the color, Root Beer has always been a top choice for me, as well as burnt orange. I thought I was a good boy when I got a Cross Demon. Guess Ill have to try harder next year. I also do my own foams very much the same way. I never thought about using a router. I am lucky I can get foam that is thick enough so I dont have to glue layers. I often cut rings on the OD of the harder foam like a "comp cut." This helps the softer outside foam stay in place when sidehilling. I have not tried an outer foam that thin but was thinking about it. Do you get enough compression in the foam to let the tire conform to the rocks? I am used to 2.2 foams, they have a much taller profile. Again geat build."thumbsup"

Good evening Hal, Nothing wrong with the Cross Demon!! I've looked at it a couple times, and had it in my basket once.;-) Being retired I have plenty of time to take care of "Honey Do's"
The router really works nice in cutting a relief in the ID of each of the foams.
On my close cell foams I try to leave 3/16" of dead space in between the foam and the tire when it's installed. This gives the tire roam to conform to the rocks, and the inner softer foam helps fill that void so the tire doesn't flatten out when crawling. I came up with this after much trial and error. ;-)

And thanks for the kind words!

Now to a update...…..

I added 4 more tubes to the cage, sometimes I'm my own worst critic. It's that damn voice! Can you pick out the four I added?

I did decide to go with some different shocks. I'm sure the kit shocks are great shocks but these have been my go to for quite awhile.
Traxxas Big bores. And this guy has taken them to another level, so....smooth!

And looking at the stickers in the photo this guy is one of #1 supplier for specialty parts. Yep, Dlux.

I have two sets of these now, the green ones were on my TRX4 almost all of last year. They are going to go on my next build after this one, I have box of parts for it already.

Notice my very very expensive shock building stand. I sold the heck out of these way back when I was dirt racing. It is a piece of gutter.

And I guess while I'm talking about Home Brew tools here is my shock shaft holder. (try saying that fast five times):twisted:

A warn out pair of wire strippers with the crimping prongs in the front. I used my Dremel and polished the crimpers so they don't score the shock shaft (5 times again) when I'm gripping them. ;-)

Ok, back to the build, I cut this piece of foam to use as a gage to see how much my ride height changes with the new shocks.

Before...……

And after...….

The big bores are a 1/8" taller than the stock shocks.

I'm not a huge fan of a bunch of flex IMO to much is worse than not enough.

Having said that here it is at max flex. I'm going to leave the flex at the heigth, so I have room for a little taller tire if I want.

I like the Club 5 Racing rear magnetic body mount, but it had the body a little higher than it needed to be so I cut it 1/4" and drilled out with 5/32 bit and installed 2 brass 3mm threaded inserts to capture the mounting screws. That 1/4" lower will help with COG with a 8 ounce cage sitting on the interior tray. "thumbsup"
Ok gang, all for tonight. Any thoughts or suggestions? 8)8)

Ernie

PS: I was asked if I figured a way to get the rear bumper closer to the body, that's my next task.

Looking great Ernie! I like the new bars for the cage, looks and structural integrity. Can’t wait to see pics of this beauty out in the wild.

If you’re looking to get it lower, one free (cost of a 4 long screws) mod that can be done to lower the COG is to mount the lower shock mount to the same mount as the lower links. A 25mm screw is needed but it helps squat the truck a tad.

I like that, I'll take a look at that today. And I did cave and ordered 4 of the off set shock caps from Erik at Dlux.:mrgreen: I want get the weight down as low as I can. Function is more important than how it looks when it comes to COG, IMO. "thumbsup"

Hey Chris, I do love building, designing, and stepping out of the box just a little.
I'm taking my time on this build so you will probably try them out before I do. "thumbsup"

This truck is looking great. Please continue. :)

Thank you young man! And I am still plugging away."thumbsup"

Got this from my friend in Texas yesterday. I have several of Fish's skids, and he wanted me to try out his new design for the VS4 10. The design pays attention to detail!! As you can see the link mounts on the skid are angled for a little better link geometry and fitment. There is a extra set of tranny holes on the other side of the skid if you want to switch things up a little. It also adds just a little more ground clearance. I can't remember the color options but I know there are several, sure Fish can help with that one.

The stock skid "thumbsup"

And Fish's skid "thumbsup"

Fish's

Very nice Fish, thanks for letting me try it out!!! "thumbsup"
