Crawler Tech: How to Build a Winch

Okay so I made a winch, very succsefuly too, worked amazingly, hardly any creep, came and went and I'm very happy on how it functioned. My JR st126 went out of wack recently and I cant use it and I need another steering servo, so I'm using my 645 again for steering, my issue is the plastic piece that went on the pot thats inside the gear that connects to the servo horn. yea well mine wasent coming out when I made my winch so i drilled it out (I tried with allen wrenches but it wouldent budge and I stripped the sides of it and was frustrated) now I realize it was a dumb move :roll:, Does anyone have one that they know they wont need and would be so generous to give me it. I'm 15 and learning I guess is my excuss... Thanks so much for anyone that considers, hit me a PM.
 
i did every thing and it works, but i only have a 2 channel controler and reciver. i pluged it in to were i normaly pug in the sirvo, but i couldnt control it, it only goes 1 way. and i REALY NEED HELP!!!!:shock:

Does it always turn no matter what position the controller is in?
If so, then you need to adjust the pot on the servo and find the stop position.
Plug the servo into the steering (ch1) position on the RX. Then adjust the pot till the servo stops with the steering wheel in the center. Then turn the steering wheel to the left and the winch should spin. Turn the wheel to the right and the winch should turn the other direction.
 
it moves only when the controler is on and my truck is on.
Well I hope it doesn't move when the controller and truck are off...then you'd have a possessed servo. :ror:

Open the servo, turn on the radio and truck, and adjust the pot until the servo stops turning. Then dab a bit of superglue to keep the pot from moving again.

and how did you make your winch to look that scale?
You have to have a good friend with a CNC mill. 8)
 
i got a spectrom 3 channel controler and when my controler is off and my truck is on, it starts to go, and i STILL after geting a $300 controler, dont a any control over it:!::!::-(:evil:
 
can you make a winch out of a traxxas digital servo? i just tried and ended up throwing it away cuz it did not work at all
Yes, you can make one from pretty much any servo. There are just two basic things to it.

1) Remove whatever piece is inside the output gear that connects it to the pot. (Pic 3 of post #1)
2) Grind/cut off or remove the pin in the output gear so it can spin 360 degrees. (Pic 1 of post #2)

I believe a Spektrum sets its fail-safe postions to where they are when the receiver is first bound to the transmitter. Get the setting to where you like them on the transmitter and then try to re-bind with the receiver. This may help your situation.


On another note, I had some thoughts on how to solve the servo creep issue that you guys have been experiencing. I think it may be possible to put an adapter inline between the receiver and the winch servo which could generate a dead band near the center. For example, if you are not trying to drive the winch it could cut the servo signal. Once the adapter determines that you try to go outside of the dead band it would pass along the signal again to extend or retract as needed. Any thoughts? I think I could just update the firmware in one of my existing adapter to handle this task.
 
I think your proposal in the other thread would work fine to keep the creep out, but as voltage drops, the creep will come back, having the need to trim again.
