Cutting a motor commutator & motor tweaks

Depends on a lot of factors, are you reseating the same brushes without refacing them? What turn and voltage are you using to break in? It used to take me 30 minutes tops on a fresh 35t motor running 3 volts. A fussy brush or checkpoint serratior makes it 3 to 5 minutes. You can also speed it up by knocking the sharp corners off the brush by rubbing the brush lightly on a table.
 
Short answer, a lot longer. So long in my opinion, afterwards I skimmed the comm again. Worth the effort I feel.
 
For what? The reseating definition? It's semantics. Reseating could be the re-using of old brushes and those would need to be reseated to be shaped to fit the new diameter of the comm. Seating could be referring to the very first time they've seen a comm. Doesn't really matter. Same thing. Both need to be run in to fully seat the brush face on the new comm diameter.
 
Pulled my Team Cobra lathe down to clean up my HH motor and my o-ring/belt thingy is MIA. Anyone know where to find a replacement? :cry:
 
Just bought my first lathe. Trinity RC4114 with a bunch of extras. 4 armatures, butt load of different brushes, hood alignment tool, some springs, bearings, shims. I think I did pretty well for $50 I have a bunch of old motors i'm looking forward to restoring. I tried posting pictures with my reply but not sure how?
 
After a month of lunch break reading I have finally made it to the end of the 102 pages of motor madness.

I picked up a Cobra Lathe not that long ago and have been keeping an eye on the various pages and forums for inexpensive tools and such to feed my need to learn how to rebuild the motors the correct way.

This is by far the best thread to read on the subject.
Not all my motors will be crawler related as I still have other cars and trucks that run brushed setups in them. It is just more economical than trying to buy enough brushless set ups to power my fleet.

Here is what I have accumulated so far....
My lathe, spring checker, brush cutter, and RPM motor holder.


Due to my work load I have not been able to fire them up yet.
But I do have just a few motors to work on....












I do have a question for the knowledgeable...
I received a pair of these Kisbee motors in a lot that I picked up.


One has this on the endbell...


And the other is normal looking...


What is the reasoning of the endbell on the first one?


I have issues...
And I haven't even gotten started yet. "thumbsup"

Just saw your other post. Needed approval. That's a capacitor board on that endbell.
 
Is the board better than the ones that need to be soldered to the can?
I have a few motors with the board on them.
I have looked and Google doesn't want to answer me....
 
I've been trying to get the boss to let me take these home for over a year now...

775 sized sensored 5 slot 12v dc motors with 300:1 gearboxes. 540 motor for scale...
