Cutting a motor commutator & motor tweaks

Now I remember you telling me you were gonna dyno some motors, then never got back to me about that. :ror:

Beer makes things fun. Like memory loss, and recollection.

I don't think they sell the turbodyno anymore.....they did a real limited run of them in like 2005 for $1000 each......its possible they didn't sell them all.

The turbodyno is the best of the bunch, by far......with the exception of fantom, its what all of us motor guys used in the racing scene...

The only issues with it really are the slave motor needs a lot of TLC to keep stuff consistent.......and while not a big deal with race motors, some crawler motors have torque higher than the dyno can measure. I've had a few motors in the past shut the thing down.....

While I have not tested it, I think I figured out the slave motor issue.....not sure if I can upgrade the sensor or not, I'll email Jim at CE and ask....

And you can't get Ted's dyno, he blew it up....:flipoff:

I think its hilarious that we are discussing dyno's, brushes and spring rates when 5 years ago people were rewinding motors with 70 or 80 turn winds!

I bet us guys that weren't crawling yet would've called BS if someone had suggested it too!

I am glad I didn't get rid of my com lathe yet."thumbsup"

It is all old stuff/tech but a refresher course does not hurt err now and then. Gets a little highstrung in here at times but it brings out more and more info on the past-present-future.

I tried two of the same springs. So I tested four springs total.

With a regular shaped black spring I got about 7.5 F U's

The black springs pictured below I got just under 8.0 F U's.

Fiddlestick Units.

To tell you the truth, I miss the motor tuning. I was a Big Jim follower and read everything I could to make a fast motor.. I always had fast motors too, but my driving was always my downfall!

Please, continue on guys. "thumbsup"

The regular black springs were from trinity, there is actually two versions.......one is super stiff, stiffer than a trinity silver. The other is like a Red (if memory serves correct) and was made for laydown motors (if memory serves correct)...

The springs picture below are Orion springs for laydown brushed motors.....they are the 175 degree springs. They are fairly rare, as Orion didn't sell a lot of them......I bought pretty much all they had years ago.....I use them for special motors.....they seem to hold tension better, be more consistent from spring to spring....

Just one of the many cool little things I have hiding in my stash of "New Old Stock" as its been called...

I miss Big Jim more than most can imagine.........the guy taught me everything he knew. There would be no Team Brood if it wasn't for Big Jim.

He probably would of gotten kicked off this forum though.....he certainly wasn't good at holding back his opinion.

I've got a TurboD collecting dust. Send me some motors (You'll get them back) and I'll post their numbers.

Jim was truly a smart guy. Way ahead of his time for the day.Worked or consulted for about every major motor company. I hear his father was pretty slick on the stuff too(on big stuff anyhoo). IIRC he was a research guru for GEs motor division.

Yeah, Jim's dad was an electrical engineer..........mainly doing big motors, like stuff as big as a semi trailer.....

While I tried to get Big Jim's motor stuff(I basically told her, figure out a price on it), his dumb bitch of a daughter (he called her the same thing), she not only stole my stuff Jim had, along with Jay Kimbroughs(Jim's best friend) and numerous others.....I heard that it ended up in a storage unit she failed to pay the bill on and most of it got thrown out......his one of a kind balancer, magnet zapper, etc..........all gone. She also refused to refund any money from his outstanding orders to people, pocketing all the paypal money.......I filled ALL of his outstanding orders I could find, at a pure loss to protect Jim's name. She then suckered all of us into donating money to pay for the funeral.........she ended up collecting way more than it cost, again pocketing the extra.

I offered to buy his vette from her too, said I would pay high blue book....thing barely ran half the time. She ended up selling it for $2500 to some guy in vegas.(high kbb was $10,000) He was working on Turbochargers spun with big electric motors, to prevent turbo lag until the exhaust took over. I bought him the motors and turbos for xmas....

Yes, 5 years later...........I am still a bit bitter about it.

Read all this on Jims forum as it was happening. I lurked around there a lot also.
