Cutting a motor commutator & motor tweaks

Dual shunt brushes don't do much really, most of the current is carried through the brush hood anyways, as the shunt is rated at like 10 amps max....so even dual is 20......I know Big Jim used to cutoff the second shunt because he hated soldering them.....

I found these from other thread for which motors are good to get:

Holmes 22t, 33t
Crawler Mafia

Other then the Holmes and CM motors which of the following are good to get and rebuild when need be?

Assotiated mini mod in 17,19t
Assotiated (Reedy)mini stump puller
HPI's rs4 modified
Trinity mini cobalts

Also when you epoxy the now re wound motor how do you do that? Do you dip the non comm side for a bit in a small tub of epoxy or pour it over? Is it even worth it at my new beginning of just starting out?

More questions will follow as days go by ;-)

Ok.. i remember reading somewhere he wasnt a fan of them but wasnt sure why... i should of thought of the hood passing the current:roll::ror:

The first two are just the Mini-Cobalt with a different sticker. The crawler mafia units though are handwound, so they are the superior unit. As far as I know, the Mini-Cobalt is no longer available really, so you will need to find someone who still has stock or a used one....

The AE motors are ok....no clue on the HPI, probably junk...

The epoxy used to dip a handwound arm is expensive and not easy to apply correctly. It's only sold in gallons.....there are other less effective epoxies you can use.......but without the correct solder or a balancer, epoxy won't do much on minimotor...

This is why you want to clean the sides of the brushes while checking on their condition. During running, they can get gunked up which limits power transfer.

More E-bay findings. Got all this for $80 bucks +/-.

2 bulk pack of 767s. 200 pair

Purple springs. @1300, stopped counting:evil:

Also a new Lathe power supply and motor break in source.

Now if someone would just loan me $8500 for the Hoffman balancer I want....:flipoff:

Nice score. I just killed my last 100pr bag of 767s 2 weeks ago. I really didn't think there were any of those left... The only 767s I ever see on feebay are the single pair bags.

I have over 10,000 pairs of 767 if ya need some:)

Sweet deal on the orion, as the slot car guys still use them.....they typically sell for $80+ on their own.

I found the Orion in a dark deep corner of E-bay. Was not even in the Toy and Hobby section. Just dumb luck:ror:

I was gunna say, I've been hunting ebay for awhile now

I picked up a APS Dyno, but the guy never sent the motor mount or dyno cables. Luckily he actually had them, just waiting for them to arrive. Cost me $30 for everything "thumbsup"

I do find it funny you made it up to 1300 in your count....you like purple fingers? You know its easier to just count out like 50 and weigh em right?:flipoff:

After I get them cleaned up, I actually have a nice cobra lathe and much more motor master a friend wants to sell....

Gotta finish up all these 5 segments and skews I got in today....should be ready wednesday....

Nice find Ted:shock:"thumbsup"

Hey anyone know where i could get a copy of Mike Golden's Dyno Viewer? I read about it when browsing for dyno info and wouldnt mind taking a look if someone has a copy

I am sure I have a copy of it somewhere.....I doesn't run very well on the newer operating systems though. I remember if freaking out on vista when we tried it.

Look on hobbytalk, you might find it still posted on there.

Its really just excel with a simple interface. You could make the same thing yourself with all the math in excel:)

Thats one thing I always liked about the Robi and Fantom, you could store all your dyno data on the computer...

I actually sorta know a way to make the turbodyno transmit to a computer, but its not cheap and there was a few parts that were beyond my skill level....so I gave up.

Does it involve grabbing some info with a TTL device? Maybe nabbing a serial stream and converting it to tab delinated file? That isn't over my head, and is what I am working on to gather the data from my own dyno. Let me know the protocol and we could work the protocol into our own logger chip.

The Turbodyno uses an HP calculator printer.....it uses that protocol to transmit the data by an infared to the printer.

Basically you would need to some how get an infared port to capture the data signal, then decode it into a program.

I talked to the calculator geeks on a couple forums.....most just told me to stick with my printer......

I figured out two ways to get the data onto a computer in theory, but did not test them.....
