Delrin Rod

Has anyone used this delrin Rod for making lower links or steering links? the part number over at www.mcmaster.com is 8579K12

i was just gonna use the 1/4" rod, but i wasn't sure of it's strength. maybe someone here has already tried it and can inform me before i waste time and money if it sucks. I was just looking for something not too heavy to build lower links and steering from. I use alum. for them now and don't have any problems, except that the Alum is a soft material and just wants to dig into rocks instead of sliding over.

If anyone has used this stuff, please post up and let me hear your exp. with it.

I'm getting ready to place a McMaster order myself, except I'm doing....check this out...1/8" Titanium rod sleeved with 1/4" delrin! It'll be a tight fit, ultra strong, and should glide smooth as ice over the rocks. Also, 1/8 Ti isn't that bad of a price on there (high grade, high strength). I'll probably have it heat-treated as well after it's threaded for the rod ends...just because I can... :lol:

I was just talking about this with a buddy this past weekend. He uses Delrin for roll cages for the Savage (uses 1/2") and I asked him if 1/4" was strong enough.

It's strong enough but too flexable. You would deffinetly need to sleeve it like WRMorrison is doing.

ahh ok...I was mainly looking at it for steering links, but if its flexible, it will still flex under pressure even with a servo.. So i will have to try the same same route as Rich then.

How do you plan on threading the Ti?

Morrision is a machinist and has the tooling...what's your plan?

I already have some Derlin rod, at 5 ft it seems to flexible. At 8-10 inches it should stiffen up a good bit.

I have connections..hehe .. Know a guy that works at a tooling shop.

Threading it should be no problem, ti is not as strong as most steel and a good deal weaker than cromoly. Standard dies should cut ti easily. Some drill rod would do very well for links. Basicaly no flexing under the load an rc and produce, and will slide over rocks very well. Just the threads will be dificult, cuting threads will need special tooling.
