Do you believe in God,Heaven or Hell?

Oh, the argument that non-belief is the same thing as belief? That’s false. Faith is accepting as true something for which you have no evidence or proof.

Of course it's false. It's like saying that not playing sports is a sport. But that wasn't my point. My point was that everybody hangs their hat on something. It might be organized and canonized or it might not be.

Sorry, didn’t mean to come off nasty, just being real.

The Lord is their shepherd, so that technically makes them the sheep part of the equation. The sheep noises were condescending though.

Yes, yes, and yes. I could honestly care less what others think. Besides, how do you even think such a diverse planet and universe came about. It just appeared? I don’t think so.

I'm curious: those of you who don't believe in a higher power, why don't you? Did you have a bad experience with religion at some point, do you dislike the ideas of accountability or perhaps not being in charge, or is it something else?

There's a lot of assumptions there. Ever considered that we simply don't find religion to be sufficiently believable?

I wish Americans would stop obsessing about god. Or the Christian God, to be specific. It's a cultural heritage. But please get over it. It's funny, because even Jews don't believe in the original God 1.0 from the old testament, so why should modern Americans cling on to God 2.0 from the new testament?

“What do I care? You’re the one that’s goin’ to Hell. “ -Puddy (Seinfeld)

Edit: I was reading the thread and thought of something Puddy said to Elaine on Seinfeld. Was just trying add a bit of levity to the thread. Didn’t mean to offend anyone.

I consider myself to be an ignostic apatheist; I do not know what you mean by 'higher power', and I have not yet seen a reason to care.
Did you have a bad experience with religion at some point,
Not at all. My parents left me to my own in that regard, and I vaguely recall that we had to do the prayer thing in school when I was very young, but other than that I have simply not been exposed to it.

What do you mean by accountability? Accountability for what one believes? Are you implying that one can consciously decide what one believes?

Hey Dave, by "accountability" I mean the idea that we could have to answer (be held responsible) for our choices by a higher power, or more simply, God. That is, if we were created by an all-powerful being, said being would be within his rights to judge us, and provide justice/consequences for our actions.

WOW! Your life must really SUCK, or bored to death, to bring back a 3 yr old controversial thread.

Hey, if you're an atheist, that's fine, I don't care, I'll believe in what I want to believe in whether it's real or not, as long as you're not trying to convert me.

Do I believe in a supreme being, YES!
.

My life does not suck. Bored, maybe ;) Anyway, I hope you realise that you believe in that 'supreme being' simply because of your upbringing and cultural background and not because that being exists. As long as you can admit that, we're fine :)

My sister-in-law claims to be atheist, yet she has a grave plot in a Catholic cemetery, IRONIC, isn't it?

No, why should she care? Maybe she just wants to be placed there for no religious reason. The microbes that eat your dead body do no care if they're on the Catholic side of the fence or not. This is completely irrelevant. I hope you realise that our bodies rot in the same way no matter what you chose to believe while alive.

To be honest, I was raised a Christian. And I was happy with that. But in adult age I realised that fellow Christians around me actually believed in many of the stories I had taken to be fairytales, comparisons and symbolic. I liked the teachings of Jesus, but Christians around me seemed to me to be more interested in money and religious politics than in Jesus' actual teachings. So in the end I just accepted that my religion was just an illusion. I had no evidence for it. Just hope and a lot of excuses. So I finally embraced what I already knew. Science and good ethics are what we need, not religion.

It seems as those who don't believe are angry that believers are satisfied in thier life choices.
I don't pound any of my beliefs on anyone, I have my own filthy sinful life to concern myself with.
I was raised in a Catholic home and figured put early it ius a false church and wandered for years.
Then, instead of going to a church I began to read and study My Fathers Word and that's when my eyes were opened, just like Saul's.
So,,,as I posted earlier, I'll see ya on the other side.
Hope it is a good experience for us all but it appears as the Bible says, only a remnant will remain as even His elect will be deceived by the evil one and thier hearts will be hardened towards the Father.
And on a side note, through those studies I discovered the pagan holidays of christmas and easter and how the roman catholic church instituted them.
Jesus, Yashua Messiah was born in late September not December.
Anyhow.
As for me and my house we will serve Yahwey.

I am not angry, just confused and annoyed. Because believers seem to be totally okay with the fact that everybody who doesn't believe in the same stories as themselves go to hell. You believe Muslims go to hell, they believe you go to hell, Catholics might believe you all go to hell... and you are all OKAY with it! Personally I think none of you go to hell, because there is no afterlife hell as far as we humans know. Hell is made up. That's why atheists and agnostics are annoyed, or 'angry' as you call it.

See, I don't understand why you would be annoyed by me, the Master has instructed me to love my brother as i love myself.
Yes that is hard to do sometimes and that is why it is a daily walk for me to do my best to follow His instruction.
I pray for the stranger as well as the friend as we are all brothers and sisters in this journey.
I believe, you do not. Thats ok with me.
I'm not annoyed by it, Yashua came that none should perish but His Word says most will run astray and fall short and will never accept His free gift.
You are my brother in the scheme of things.

Throughout the history of mankind, there have been thousands of higher powers or Gods to appease and obey. Who's to know for certain that they picked the right one?

The annoyance isn't with the satisfied believers that live happily, quietly, and respectfully. It's with those that don't. The bible warns about false religion, including within itself, and there are many within the public and political realms that have taken up that false religion and mean to forcefully convert the world to their way of thinking.
