Hi all, im new to crawling and have a question. I have a Axial SCX-10 Jeep Rubicon, I have a set of Axial 8-hole beadlocks on the way and im wondering if I should drill holes in them to vent/let water out?? With my stockers after every wet run I have to squeeze all the water out before putting up the truck. I have heard with beadlocks if you dont drill holes, water wont get it, but is there a disadvantage to this? Or should I drill holes to vent it? If so, how many holes and how big of holes do I drill and where?

It kind of is a pain to have to squeeze out the water after every wet run, but if it is absolutely necessary then I dont mind it. Majority (if not every) run I do with my Jeep its getting in water

What are some thoughts on this??

It depends on the foams you run. Most people vent the tires, that way a couple high speed runs at the end of the day should clear out most of the moisture.

I vent both the tires and wheels. You are not going to keep the water out, so the more exits the better, IMO.

IMO I vent the tires, only because the tires will eventually wear out as opposed to the wheels....so I would rather punch a hole in a tire then an expensive wheel. But that's just me.

Cheers,
Wade

If you're using CI's Double Deuce foams venting the wheels is not an option. Those inner foams are practically air tight.

Unless you put wheel weights in your rims. Then you have a gap and it breathes just fine.
I've always vented rims because holes in tires just don't seem right to me.... Just sayin. Never had an issue and all my rigs get CI foams right from the get go.

I used to vent wheels, but not anymore.

CI's site even says use 2mm leather punch, evenly spaced holes....3 in every smaller tire....4 holes in every larger tire. Works for me too.

Both my kids scx10's have the tires vented poking two small holes in the center of the tread across from each other using a hot soldering tip as for my tf2 its heavy enough that i dont see the need to vent.

I don't vent my tires or wheels...
As long as I can get a good seal at the bead
and the foam inserts are supportive.

reason being... my 1:1 tires are sealed
So in the name of scale... I follow that rule.

I've vented tires before...
but only on a racing rig, rolling a groomed, hard packed track.
Even then... the foam inserts would be dust...
When it was time to change the tires.
But that was for competition... not every day use.

Dirt mixed with moisture... inside the tire's interior
is not good... no matter how one slices it.

Imagine the tire's interior similar to that of a chicken's gizzard...
gonna grind and muck up that insert but good...
and it won't be consistent if it's ground to a pulp.

Punching holes at the tire's OD tread surface...
does not allow for complete evacuation
no matter how fast one spins the tires.

Sure some moisture will escape...
But the dirt remaining will still be in there...
and will eat away at the foam insert(s).

I vented the rims on mine. They're the stock wheels that came with my ax10 so I didn't mind putting a small hole in them. I've gone through alot of mud puddles over the years and haven't had issues with water getting in.

I used to be like this, then I went up to crawl at around 7000' altitiude from near sea level...lol...my tires were like balloons and I had to vent something so out came the curved lexan scissors and snipped couple hole in my tires. "thumbsup"
