DX5C vs hacked GT3C

I'm pretty fresh to the hobby, so let me know if I got any of this wrong.

I want to upgrade the radio for my TRX-4, I want 5 channels with end point adjustment so I can run the lockers independently.

I am trying to come up with some pro's/cons.

The spectrum has a better ui, and seems to do everything I need, but costs more, and the receivers cost way more (from what I see). The switches/buttons are layed out better from what I see.

The hacked GT3C is cheaper, does everything I need it to, has cheap receivers and a extra channel. The UI is limited by the screen, the button layout isn't really meant for controlling all those channels.

Is the spektrum better from a hardware standpoint?

What am I missing from my list?

In terms of quality, yes. Some buttons are known to stop working on GT3C's. It's common enough that when the pushbutton function of the selector wheel died on mine, I found a how-to video for the fix on YouTube.

I'm a Spektrum fan and I hate everything about the GT3 series. But a lot of people love the GT3 and if you drop it on the trail it's a much cheaper mistake.

I run my TRX4 with a DX5R and it works great, for the money the DX5C is a great value.

I have seen too many people run FlySky radios and have them fail to trust them.

That looks great. When they release the pertinent info like receiver compatibility and recharging I'll pay more attention. I do like it though!

I'm happy with my hacked gt3c. I did some looking a couple mknths ago thinking I needed to up my radio game i stead of using "cheap junk" as I've heard flysky called many times. In all my digging I didn't find 1 radio that had all the features I've grown to love about flysky the single biggest being the usb rechargeable battery. Why hasn't everyone put that simple plug and circuit into their radios? It is common sense to me!

The cheap receivers that don't flinch up to 9 volts is great too.

One reason i went with the gt3c is it works with axials 2 channel ae3 recivers but not the tactic so it made sence to me seeing as i already have 3 axial recivers in my rigs already so i just needed to bind them to the gt3c and all is good

Oh and it works with all my redcat recivers also

My only real long term experience with Spectrum is the older DX3C and DX3R I use for my BND Losi Micros, but I've run hacked GT3B'S for roughly 8 years without a failure.
As far as the UI and button layout, you'll only have to program it once, and once you learn the menu it's not bad, as far as the button layout your needs are relatively basic for a transmission and lockers. IMO it will work fine especially for the $$

I have a DX4S and is happy with that to my Wraith
But to my TRX I use the GT3C and love it.
I need and use all 8 channels, and what I have found no other radio can give you 8 channels without going with a "stickradio"

I'd say if you don't mind sticks, the Flysky FS-i6X wins hands down. Can use $5 3ch receivers, $10 6-8ch, and even their dual-antenna 10ch receivers. Lots of mixing options, 4 switches and 2 dials to use for any channel from 5-10.

For pistol grip the GT3C is great - cheap TX and can use the cheap RX (except AFHDS 2). The lipo battery can be charged with a mini-USB cable, screen is easy to read, and the hack is able to use the limited screen fairly well. You may be limited with buttons, but it lets you use the buttons in several configurable ways. The problems you'll find are glitching other radios (fixed for years), faulty on/off button (fixed years ago), and the faulty buttons. The later isn't very common and can be fixed with contact cleaner in some cases. If not, they're fairly generic microswitches you can find on ebay.

Radiolink and the new Flysky GT-5 would be the next options IMO. They're pricier but don't need any modding. The GT-5 can use cheap receivers, and Radiolink's RX seem to be not far behind.

Personally I'd recommend avoiding Spektrum. They have a big following but there's issues ranging from mild to wild. One recent example in this forum was a HiTec servo incompatible with a Spektrum RX. The owner swapped in other servos and they worked fine, and the HiTec worked fine on his Traxxas & other radio. The main issue that comes up is their RX's are the most susceptible to brown-outs than any other. One youtube vid pitted Spektrum up against Flysky and FrSky with a powerful servo each and the Spektrum was browned-out constantly along with many full resets while the other 2 rarely skipped a beat.

From my own experience I am switching from Spektrum to Flysky as money allows. Spektrums products are fairly good but I've have too many of their ungodly expensive receivers die on me. I can't justify 60 dollars for a 4 channel receiver anymore.
