Father and Son build of a pair of Yeti XLs

Yea it's fun to build and play with now you just
Need some Barndog panels they are a must you will
Soon find out

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year...
Build of my son's YXL has begun. He wouldn't stick around for much more than 4 hours of sitting with me, but whatever. He had other gifts to play with and friends that wanted him to hang out.

I put the liquid mask film on my body panels and drew out the design. Haven't cut or sprayed yet. In time.

With my son's build I made sure to clean the oily film off parts that need thread locker. I'll need to go through mine and redo them.

I put the castle link cable in his, will need to do mine.

More updates later.

Happy Christmas, Merry New Year. Glad to hear you are having fun with your boy and your Yetis.
I didn't end up getting my son one. I'm going to hold out for a bit as he's really been with happy with the Slash 4x4 Monster Baja Bug I built him (just a slash with ripsaws). Keep us posted and MOAR PICS!!!

Keep us posted and MOAR PICS!!!

I know, I know...
I'm trying to balance building the YXLs with everything else, including some food poisoning I picked up along the way.

I can't wait to paint my body, I came up with a cool design, or at least I think so.

My first try at a lexan body paint job. I was kinda ambitious. I designed it with a Sharpie marker on the outside, put three coats of liquid mask on the inside, and freehand cut all the masking out. I brushed the mask on, but not thick enough. Had some bleeding and some areas pulling away before I wanted them to. But all in all, I'm happy with the outcome. My son likes it.

We'll do something similar on his, but reverse (orange with black trim) and he wants a geometric pattern.

That is a very good looking paint job I've painted
A lot of body's and mine never look that good

thanks fellas. The scratched cage and different shades of orange bother me a little but overall i dig it. It's only going to get more battle scars anyway.

Happy New Year! Happy New Paint Jobs.
They're not quite complete yet (need some more details and lights and stuff) but they're really close.

Thanks. The paint isn't perfect, but for my first and second paint jobs, I think they look great. His 3D hex pattern was really hard to unmask and paint but it came out good. It's black, then smoke, then silver under the smoke, then white.

My son opted to set up his with 80% throttle, and I don't think I've turned mine down yet. I don't remember what the punch control was set at. Lost track of what I did, even though lately I've been eating, drinking, and sleeping YXLs. I have to connect mine up to his PC and crank my BEC up a little. This way the LED lights will be brighter and the servo fed more voltage.

Made some brackets out of plastic L shaped trim. Mounted the RC4WD 2" light bar in the pusher bar. Put some LED lights front and rear, and the blue ones on another bracket I made behind the dash.

Looks awesome. Liquid Mask is awesome stuff. I spent an entire week making a Venom (a bad guy from Spiderman) themed body for my son. It looked awesome and now it's beat to high hell. I just buy Barndog panels or black truck bed liner now.

This thread cracks me up because I can feel your "frustration" in some of the posts and I can sympathize. My son doesn't have the patience for a kit build either. He's like "Can I drive it? How fast will it go? Can I jump it? Will be as fast as your Yeti? Can I drive it?" BOY, I'm trying to mesh gears here... you're stressing me out!!!! I don't say that, I just answer as calmly as I can. Kids today... I tell ya. I used to spend hours building kits when I was his age. I would spend hours making sure everything perfect before even plugging in the battery. I still think RTR was a smart move from the manufactures. It's a bit sad that most (mine at least) can't sit still but will build a virtual city for days.

You did an awesome job and I'm sure your son appreciates the hard work (if not now, one day he will). RCing with the kiddos is fun.

Thanks. My son read what you wrote and assured me that he appreciates all my hard in the here and now, which is nice.

Yesterday I asked if he wants lights on his Yeti too. He said he does, and asked if I bought a second set of lights, which I did. Then he asked when I'll do the install. I said when he helps me do it. Hours and hours with his interests don't phase him... Helping me with stuff gets old quick. When I was a kid his age I'd spend hours detailing my model cars, or take apart and make stuff out of old electronic things. Kids these days grow up in a disposable world. Play through ten levels of a game and then beg for the next one.
