after shooting a barret .50 cal, If I said slugs went farther then a rifle I would beat myself over the head.

Well, my grandpa had gotten out of the hospital the day before and had been staying with us, and I killed it and drug it home and got it hung up right at dark.
So, we let it hang over night and cut it up the next morning.

ah thats a pretty quick cut up, i prefer to hang em for about 14 days befor skinning and cutting them up, it really helps with breaking down the proteins in the meat to make it more tender

i shoot the same setup with a 2-7 power scope, i've dropped a deer at 130 and would shoot farther. they're not to bad with a sims pad but before i got it i bought a couple boxes of lightfield 3 1/2" sabots. something like 700 grains at 1900 fps, for the life of me i still don't know why i fired two of them cause the first one cracked something bad. devoloped a flinch and had to learn to shoot again. i keep the other box and a half put up with the factory recoil pad waiting on someone to talk big when were shooting sometime.

its no bad, winters where i am tend to be around the 0-5* ceclcius mark, so dress it in the field and just hang it out side with the skin still on. then again with a gut shot you probably took out a bunch of organs and let some of the poop juice out. cant say iv ever been discusted by the smell befor... then again every one smells things differently

your pops probably does it that way and so you do as well.
just for the hell of it try hanging your next deer by the neck.
start cutting from the chest down.cut slow and when you get down towards the bottom of the stomach stand back just a little.
the main part of the guts and blood will fall cleanly out on the ground and none of it can go into the upper chest cavity.
I have been hunting 23yrs now and have tried evrything and this is the cleanest/easiest for me.
how much land do you hunt on? and for how many years have you been hunting the land your on?and with howmany other hunters?

I normally dress mine in the field, hence the term "field dress". Leave that crap in the woods! Takes less than 5 minutes to gut out a deer with a good sharp knife, unless I've had a real messy double lung shot, there is normally not that much blood to deal with. I primarily bow hunt so I do not have to deal with a lot of internal carnage but broadheads still do quite a number.
Hanging the deer by the legs allows to body to cool properly and allows for proper drainage.
Everyone has their own way of doing things, if it works for you then why change. Like he said earlier, you likely learned from you dad, as did I.
Congrats on your deer, now cut them tenders out and fry em up!
We've had our land for about sixteen years. My dad used to hunt it when I was about five years. It's I think 24 acres, no other hunters ( that we allow, since how we've found some hunting here before, although no harvests.) Normally my dad and I hunt on my grandpas place. There's not much deer action here, although we have turkeys, which is what I was hunting for the day I killed him.
I field dressed him, I thought it was pretty simple hanging him upside down, once we got him skinned, we took the head off, and run the water hose in him to wash all the blood out of him.

We took some meat and boiled it, to get it nice and tender and falling apart, and made some bbq. It was delicious.

if there are no other hunters try stalking, it is more exciting and will make you a better hunter,even when your not stalking.
24acrs. is a bit small but still big enough if you have some thickets.
its not about the kill,its about the thrill,and stalking turkey is harder than stalking deer and your hunts will be more rememberable/exciting. trust me.

yea evryone has there own way and I have done them all.
and grizz should to,dont limit yourself to one way of doing things,without trying others.
but they still drain hanging from the neck,and I am to old to be bending over reaching up into the cavity and pulling everything out.
by the neck it all just falls out under its own wieght. all I got to do is cut out whats left behind.
by the neck I would saydeffinatly the cleanest way to dress one out.
unless you intend to quarter it out.
Yeah we have a lot of big thickets. But where we are, there are many more farms that have grown up around us, and he come off of the land next to us when I shot him.

Yeah, if I'm not mistaking, you can use the handgun. Although I could be wrong.

hardest thing for me to get used to was moving so slow.
it takes me around 30 min-an hour to go about 50 yds depending on terrain and whats around.you dont want to jump em,you want to follow them and they dont know your watching. I followed a group of 37 turkey all day once. cosest I got to one turkey was 5',closest I got to the group was 50' it was tiring yet exciting. how many men get to watch a group of turkey all day and stay within 50' while they roost for the night.
leaves are your biggest enemy.
when you get where you can walk through dry leavs without letting the animals know what you are,your a stalker.
I use wind and trains to my advantage when I can.
I dont know what its like being color blind so it may be alot harder for you.
try stalking after rains,its much easier to be quet when its wet.
