Flat Irons to Chisels

I've been running Flatiorns for quite some time now and I like them but I wanted to try out a new tire so I picked up a set of Chisels. I built them last night, I was shocked to see that proline used the same size memory foam for the chisels as the Flatiron's. I had allready did some searchin here on chisels and I picked up some Losi Memory Foams for the blue claws / bashers and that is what I installed. I've only put about 5 mins of drive time in and can allready tell that chisels sidehill alot better and traction may be a little better hard to tell till I get more drive time in. I probally shouldn't make a major tire switch right before a comp but what the hell"thumbsup" Here's the build pictures.

I think the foams in the flat irons are to big. I used my stock foams (well, cot down 2.2 memfoam) which gave a lot more traction. try putting ur 1.9 memfoam in ur flat irons, worked for me.

Good job on the switch! I'm not a fan of the flat irons. I don't think they sidehill or grip better than the losi blues. Pluss they throw the look of the 1.9 off with there size. And the block pattern remind me of some cheap rc4wd tires. I think you will be happy with the new prolines you got!

Hells yeah. I've been rocking these for a few weeks now. I can say they hook better than my blues. I'm using the standard memory foam that come with them. The wheels just need some extra breathing room whenever using them

Well I took it out today for about 30 min on my home course and they kicked my flatirons's ASS! these tires are great! I do miss the ground clearance of the flatirons and I made some mistakes by dropping my rear tire in a hole that the FI's would of went over. It's weird that both tires are made of the same compund of rubber I really wans't expecting too much more of a difference. but I guess the lug pattern makes the difference. I also noticed a more nimble crawler the turning radius was much improved.

Not sure haven't run either of the losi blue tires but the chisels are maybe a 16th of a inch shorter than the factory go nowhere claws:mrgreen:

Memory foams are way over rated. They have no reaction time. Get a good set of foams that fit the whole tire. Or a very full set of memory foams that fill the whole tire. You want something that can put some pressure on the rocks and push out. memory foams do the opposite of that. I think if you get an oversize set of memory foams it could work great. I think in the Chisels memory foams they sell with the tires are the same from the flatirons. So they could work much much better because of the bigger size...."thumbsup"

I think you need the tire to have some room between foam and tire so the tire can 'hug' the rock so to speak. More tire contact on the rock = more traction. but what ever works for your specific rig.

I will be getting some chisels soon, maybe tonight.

Are the beads angled like the flat irons or squared like the claws?

I understand that more contact = more Traction. But that would be like saying no foams would work the best because you would have the best contact of all. There is a balance. The losi mem foams or ok but I think they are to small for the tires. I think the mem foams that are in the flat irons would work better because of there size and they would wrap around rocks better by pushing out around corners and hooks. Something that very soft and smaller mem foams cannot offer. Its just from my personal experience using mem foams compared to others. Some of the hardest lines I got up were without mem foams. The MRC is a very small rig though and you can get away with using smaller mem foams because of the weight.

testing memory foam's would be alot easier if it didn't take a hour to breakdown 4 rims to try something out. I do plan to cut one set of the stock chisel / flatiron foams down too a comfortable inbetween losi and flatiron. but it may take a while to get around too right now.

Yes that is a big problem.. I hate breaking down rims and tires. It they fell good and crawl good with the Losi mem foams I say leave them "thumbsup"

Well had our comp today and the chisels were the BOMB! I was running up againest blue claws ( Austin and trace ) panther plowboys ( Kamikaze ) and cut hammers ( chris ). I had a 14 going into gate 7 of 10 and blew up my transmission I cant say what would of happen on the last 3 gates but I had a chance to beat some VERY GOOD drivers and it was the chisels ( and a little luck) that got me there! Had a great time and learned alot..( my second comp ever :shock: ) Here's a couple shots of the 1.9's

The pics rock dude. Glad to hear you like the tires a lot. I just picked them up

and swapped them out for the losi blues. I cant wait to run them... I kept the

full size foams in there. We will see. Sweet pics again man. good job on the

Now, on to the serious stuff. You may well have had a 14 going into gate 7, but all that means is that you did decent up to gate 7. Sounds to me like your tranny blowing up is just an excuse why you DNF'd it. I can see it now

There are only two problems with that, first, instead of your driveshaft giving up, your tranny did. And the second, and biggest flaw in the whole bit was thinking that I wouldn't know. I mean seriously. How could I not.

Well I finally got around to testing a foam set up for the chisels and I'm very Excited on the outcome.

1...front tires have 4.50z on each tire with the losi memory foams
2...Rear tires have no weight and factory MRC foams with the losi memory foams stretched around that bascially running 2 foams in the rear.

I also moved the battery from the rear axle and mounted to the side of the chassis. Now I just ran this set up for about 45 mins and I tore it up this set up was for me unstopable! the rear tires used to have so much bite that they would flip the truck over before climbing a ledge now they will slip and bounce over the ledges. my steep up hill climbs have also became easier! I strongly suggest you try this out I bet you'll like it.

A couple questions, did you ever run the stock foams in these tires, and what is your skid clearance now with these tires? I noticed in your build thread it was a little over 2". Did you make adjustments to keep it the same or just let sit lower w/the new tires. Also I'd like to thank you publicly for your frequent updates on your build its been a big help to me because I also have a mini zero and some chisels on the way. Its awsome that you have taken the time to write your threads and help take some of the guess work out of some things for every body else. Again thanks alot.

Thanks, I'm glad to help I've been getting tips and advice form others to help me out and it's only right to pass on good info!

And the answer is no on the chisel factory memory foam I have not run it. I read where a couple of guys have not liked it so I never tried it plus I'm happy with what I'm running now but I will try it sooner or later.

my belly height is now at 1 15/16's and I made no adjustments to compensate. getting used to the lower belly height by changing the way I approach rocks. I think next on my list to get will probally be shocks or the alum goodies but not sure what i want yet.
