Getting more flex out of the sawback

I dug back trying to find the thread but I'm wanting to turn my sawback into a flexing machine rather than a 2x4. Anyone tried 4 linking theirs or tweaked the shocks and springs a certain way that I haven't?

running the softest leaf setup and a set of longer throw shocks did the trick for me... i used the take off shocks from one of my scx'es. they leak like a screen door, so i put 2 drops of 100k diff oil in them to slow them down a bit ( but too thick to leak out) they got me more throw in both directions.

my friend North up in jersey is 4 linking his, i know the front is done and it twists up pretty good, but i havent seen it on the trail to find out if his setup works any better than a set of squishy leaves and some anti wrap bars...

Not crazy flex.. But decent for a leafer, I think it might twist a bit further when a battery is in it..

the only way i can see that they would be of any benefit is with a spring under axle setup. at standard ride height, the extra extension the shooter shackles give would over extend the driveshaft angle and cause hellacious bind issues.

Then why not lengthen your upper links?
Also, get wider angle shafts and the should be fine.

I tried reversing the front shackles, i felt like it had more restriction than the stock config so i reverted it to stock. Also ordered the shooter shackles from rc4wd, i hope i can make it work.

Dextan, when you did the shackle reversal, did you clearance the shackle? That's what it took for mine to flex smoothly. You can make your own revolver shackles using chain links, btw. Let me know what you do.

Chief, i made my own shakles, i'll post pics when i get in front of my pc in a few hours. I probably did it wrong. Haha, but without the shocks, stock felt like it smoother throughout the travel.

chief first i made this...

but i didn't like how it looked, so i decided to just make locking arms for the front forward shackle assembly to fix it like so...

i also made my own shackles with what i have lying on the workbench. making sure to keep pinion and height same as stock...

but the end of the spring hits the chassis just before full 'compression'. also, it felt kinda 'stiffer' to compress the spring compared to the stock.

any ideas how i can make it work without grinding stuff on the chassis or modifying the stock assemblies?

you thought about using the rc4wd "red" springs? they are butter soft and flexy as hell, i have them on my bruiser. they are actually soft enough that you would need to run a helper spring. it seems from the last pic that a softer leaf might help both in compression and sag

i heard good and bad things about the red springs. i am expecting 80mm transition shocks today to try out, if i believe i need more softness, i might just spend the 30 for those reds. thanks for the input! "thumbsup"

as far as the springs go, the good- they are soft, the bad- they are REAL soft. im only using them on the back of my bruiser, as they wont hold the weight of the truck. they will allow for sick sag though.i found that only running 1 leaf offered enough (3.5") articulation for me, im interested in what you get out of the transitions

now you got me really intrigued re: red springs.

i'll definitely about the transitions 80mm, i ordered the 90mm ones with the kit but just can't put em on the mounts without a lot of modifications which i didn't explore, sold the shocks. now with the incoming shooter shackles, i wonder if i should have held on to them, or at least a pair.

Dextan, like stevem50 said, try using a softer leaf setup. I run only the main leaf, granted being spring-under helps it not to bend as much. Make sure that your shackles and mounts aren't binding when you install them also buddy.

chief, i use the main leaf and the smallest helper up on top which, i believe, is as good as not having it on top haha. the shackles weren't binding, it's just that it hits the chassis rail just before full extension of the leaf spring. maybe if i move the shackle assembly a few mm forward, i can make it happen, but i don't want to lose the bumper. :( i won't give up on this though haha.

stevem, here's some pics of the transition 80s, sorry i can't find my ruler and measure tape.

extended

compressed

+10mm shock towers up front (doing a +5mm in the rears as i have to alot a few mm of down travel for the shooter shakles i ordered, plus it will hit the body if the towers are too high)

fully compressed.
