Been looking around iTunes and can't really decipher which would be good to get. I have the 4gen itouch, and I'm trying to find a GPS app that works offline and actually uses the satellites for location. Is that possible with an itouch? Or does the iPhone only come with the capabilities?

There r several apps that can store maps for offline use, but I don't know about the gps of the iPod touch. Check out Gaia gps and motion x gps

Not sure if the Garmin app works like what you are wanting but we use it with our iPhones and its just as good as there portable units and way cheaper. Worth checking out.

4th gen iPod Touch does not have a GPS receiver.
The location services are based on WiFi base station detection and checking a database of known base station locations (which can be wrong, as a base station could be moved to a new location without the database being updated for years).

That's what I was thinkin, damn. Been wanting to take back roads out in the mountains and was going to see if my itouch could be a portable GPS unit so I don't have to buy one

Find you a cheap used touch phone using android that has GPS. The google maps should work without cell service hooked up.

I use Cyclemeter to track mtn and road bike rides, trail riding in my Samurai, hikes, runs, etc. Has speed, distance, elevation gain/loss, etc. Lots of fun to play with. $5.

A couple of weeks ago on a trail ride, my buddies license plate broke off his rig. We used the app to backtrack our route until we found it. Paid for itself right there.....

I agree, buy an old iPhone 3GS or similar and use it as your iPod, it has gps without cell service or data I believe. My experience with just using google maps offline is you need to manually (zoomed in as close as you may want to look at the map) scroll where you will be traveling and let the map load completely so it is cached for offline use. Looks like decision time, and lots o research.

That's what I use to do lol just zoom in to an area where I might get lost, let it load then I'd go off line lol it never failed me lol

Anyone know if the 3G iPhone does have GPS? With our Internet?

If you have the money buy a stand alone. I got rid of my Garmin Nuvi and purchased a Montana 650T Amazing GPS..works anywhere. A bit pricey though...
