It was almost about to work until it said " can not contact software server" so ya.

We dont have a local apple store.

So I made a bit of progress here just now

Search for a program called Tiny Umbrella. Launch it and connect your phone to the computer. If it detects it you might try clicking exit recovery and see if it reboots.

If you end up in the same place you should get into recovery again and use Tiny Umbrella and run the TSS Server. Then try the recovery in iTunes again.

BTW, what model Iphone is it?

This is a common problem with older iphones.....my sons itouch did it, as did my old 3g I gave my son to use as a an ipod....

If you google it, you will find tons of info on it, there is even youtube videos. In most cases you have to restore in DFU mode....might as well jailbreak it while yer at it unless you want to use IOs5....

Hilarious!!!!

I like this one too. I can't believe Apple is squeezing more money out of their seemingly hypnotized following :lmao:

you should be able to restore it from DFU mode, but you may have to put it in pwned DFU mode and restore it to a custom firmware created by redsn0w.

how far are you from kansas city? there's an apple store on the plaza "thumbsup"

Like an hour and a half. haha. Ill try this DFU mode thing again.

It gets into DFU mode and I click restore and says "Iphone software server could not be contacted"

My sister swears that the Japanese quake/tsunami caused damage that kept the chips for the iPhone 5 from being produced:roll::evil:

if you use a mac, download the latest version of redsn0w (thats a zero) and go select the firmware you have on it if you know it, and say enter pwn DFU mode and it will get you there, then you should be able to restore it in iTunes. if you use windows, there is a program that does the same thing but i'm not sure what it's called.

Have you downloaded the last rom for your phone? Download that and then click restore while holding the left shift key. It will let you specify what restore file to use.

what iPhone is it? i definitely would't put iOS 5 on it if it is the 3g. anything later than that should be good.

check this out, i bet it will work.

i had a similar issue when i got the iPhone 3GS i currently use, it was unplugged while restoring and got a similar issue and like yours, it said software version N/A. i did what the link describes and it worked for me, although i was jail breaking and unlocking it too so it should be a little easier for you.

He doesn't need to jailbreak it. If he just downloads the right image and does a selective restore it should be fine. It won't need to contact their servers.
