looking for any go kart guru's to help me out.
me and a friend inherited a fl250 buggy for
free, complete minus motor. these things are
pretty ancient, 1978 to 1984. finding a stock
motor is proving to not be an option, but a transplant
motorcycle motor seems the go.

the thing is, its belt driven (vee belt). it has transfer case hooked
up to the back axle, with a big pulley on it. i have seen them
with 400cc snowmobile motors going pretty hard but we
just want it to run, somewhat safely. it has front shocks but
no rear suspension,if anyone has done anything similar
i would be interested to hear.

just thought i would throw it out there in the off
chance some has done something close, or heard of
the buggy. im thinking get a belt, get a bike motor
~250cc weld a pulley on it and put a spring loaded
idler pulley on too.im not sure if a vee belt can take
a motorcycle engine shifting gears? any advice would be great.

thanks in advance

ide say do some researching. find what honda sourced the engine from (most likely one of their quads in the same time frame)
then keep checking sites ad ebay for the remaining parts. all of the parts are out there. just have to find them.

as far as putting a motorcycle engine on there. always possible if you have a welder and a little fab skills. but ide definitely convert it to chain drive if you did that

I had an Oddysey like 20 years ago. Fun as hell but could not keep the thing on it's wheels. I'd give a nut for it back now.

yeah with no rear supension they drove like a backhoe would :lmao: ....why do you think they don't make them anymore, can you say law suit  ....if you have a welder and fab skills like said above, then build yourself a cart with a motorcycle engine that you can shift....me and a buddy did it in the late 70's with supension at all 4 corners, that ran like a bat out of hell "thumbsup" ...........bob

....

dirtbike motor would be great, but you'd have to loose the belt drive. The gearing would be different and the belt probably wouldn't hold up anyway.

I'd suggest a CR250 motor and a butterfly shifter  and some better triangulation for the cage "thumbsup" Whatever motor you get, make sure it has a cable clutch. it's much easier to hook up.

Kris here on the board has a cr250 motor for sale cheap shoot him a pm.

I've saw a snowmobile triple stuffed in one, it was stupid scary fast, but a small CC snowmobile engine should be an easy swap.

Bingo but the faster the better say a 500cc polaris indy motor should work
Maybe even a outboard motor laid on its side. "thumbsup"

The funny thing is...Me and a buddy also inherited a 250. Not really complete, but its there nonetheless. We have 2 snowmobile motors sitting there waiting for us to decide when to start on it. If i get something done before you, ill let yo know what i find"thumbsup" Both of my motors also have V belt drives on them, so i think it should be fairly simple.

shame im eons away. lol.
i have a mate who can weld anything needed, putting
a sprocket on the back axle seems impossible given the setup it has.
there are some older motors here in the paper, might have a look at
some bike wreckers. the motor "250cc" is really a 12hp briggs and stratton
motor as far as i know. a 250cc motorcycle motor should have more oopmh,
just worried about the belt drive.might just have to be a case of trial
and error.

i researched the guts out of this thing and there wasn't an awful lot.
thanks for the reply's "thumbsup"

I had a 79 when I was a kid growing up, my dad traded labor for months to get the thing for me. After the stock motor died he put an older 400cc polaris motor from a snowmobile in it and added a radiator/fan combo. I wish I still had that thing, I traded it for a 85 virago when I was 17.

fl250's are great for destroying your kidneys. Back in the day they made some race cages for them that where allot better than stock.

As for motor, you need to make sure you get the right clutches... it uses a drive clutch on the motor and a driven clutch on the axle. Personally, I would put on an industrial briggs motor rather than a stock 2 smoke. Ive got a rotax 583 sitting in the garage if you really want it to go fast.
