Okey, spring is getting closer here in Finland and now it's time to build a new Unlimited class rig. I had driven five years with my old rig and allthought it was unstoppable in the hills, it was time to put it on a shelf. "thumbsup"

IMG_0178.JPG

I got the wheels and tires from my previous rig. That's the new body for the rig. If everything will go as planned, it'll get a Krawler Konceptz treat. "thumbsup""thumbsup"

IMG_0179.JPG

Here is what I'm starting with. I bought it used and it had broken rear diff and pinion. Gotta fix those, when I find the parts.

IMG_0180.JPG

Front axle is ready to go! 8)

IMG_0181.JPG

Some working with the rear of the car is to be done.

IMG_0183.JPG

That's where I got so far. I have to buy some parts first and then I can start building it. A little over a month to the first comp. :flipoff:

I will have to hurry!

NO welding! Wow that just blew my mind. Is that brake line? Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

Stuff started to walk in. "thumbsup"

IMG_0194.JPG

I want this thing to turn! :flipoff: ProTek RC PTK-170S Chad Bradley Team Edition!

What I don't get about these high voltage servo specs is that they rate it to 7.4v.

A high voltage servo is supposed to work on 2S LiPo (I've asked AMain/ProTek a few years ago and yes, their HV servo's are designed to run safely on 2S),
which is *nominally* 7.4V but peaks at 8.4V (4.2V per cell).
So to be able to run on 2S liPo it should handle 8.4V without problems.
So why not rate it 8.4V ?

Fair question. :) Good thinking!

Let's get this project on the way! I've finished my crawlers, so now it's time to put the foff rigs on the move.

IMG_0296.JPG

My starting point. :lmao:

IMG_0297.JPG

Fortunately I've got company! "thumbsup"

IMG_0298.JPG

Bought some wider hexes for it.

IMG_0299.JPG

And new rear diff gearing.

IMG_0300.JPG

All the spare parts in there. Let's see what I need.

IMG_0301.JPG

Here's the old diff. To my naked eye, I don't see the gearing as big problem as the bearing on the right side. :flipoff::flipoff:

IMG_0302.JPG

New diff housing as well.

IMG_0303.JPG

Will change everything just to be sure. ;-)

IMG_0304.JPG

Diff reassembled.

IMG_0305.JPG

Some of this magnificent Vanquish Products grease on it and it's ready to rumble again. "thumbsup"

IMG_0306.JPG

Attaching the diff housing to the rear axle.

IMG_0307.JPG

Well greased! 8)

IMG_0308.JPG

Few screws to attach still.

IMG_0309.JPG

I'm beginning to see the bigger picture here!

IMG_0310.JPG

Ladies and gents - we have a roller!! 8)

IMG_0312.JPG

Diff works. :lmao:

IMG_0313.JPG

It looks awesome as a roller IMO.

IMG_0314.JPG

From the rear.

IMG_0315.JPG

Next job would be repainting the body.

IMG_0316.JPG

And the electronics workout after that.

IMG_0317.JPG

Weight as a roller.

IMG_0318.JPG

Aprrox. weight RTR.

IMG_0319.JPG

Gonna run it with 5S and 2200kv motor. Same set as my previous rig. "thumbsup"

IMG_0320.JPG

Battery fits on the box perfectly.

IMG_0321.JPG

Here are my both foffers. They will be comp ready after this weekend. "thumbsup"

IMG_0322.JPG

I'll continue with painting and electronics today in the garage. I want to test it today!! "thumbsup"

Okey, spend some more time at the garage yesterday.

IMG_0323.JPG

Servo was going to change in the last minute. The Protek will go to my modified class rig and the Savöx will be for this.

IMG_0324.JPG

Motor found it's place quickly. "thumbsup"

IMG_0325.JPG

I wasn't build for soldering. So I got some help. :flipoff:

IMG_0326.JPG

Servo is on the spot now as well!

IMG_0327.JPG

It's easier like this. You have all the places ready for the electornics and you don't have to start building mounts for them. :lmao:

IMG_0328.JPG

Quickly attached ESC and tested with a low EPA's first. Dont want it to go full throttle with 5S LiPo.

IMG_0329.JPG

Everything works. Time to start soldering.

IMG_0332.JPG

Thank god, I only have to do this max. once in a year. :ror:

IMG_0334.JPG

Don't need zip ties for the wiring. It's tight enough. :flipoff:

IMG_0335.JPG

Hmmmmm....

IMG_0336.JPG

It's all there! "thumbsup"

IMG_0337.JPG

All the electronics are now on their spots.

IMG_0338.JPG

Tight tolerances for the wiring indeed.

IMG_0339.JPG

Insert battery here.

IMG_0340.JPG

Ready for first testdrive! "thumbsup"

IMG_0341.JPG

Model named now as well. "thumbsup"

IMG_0342.JPG

Nothing went wrong this time! Everything works as they should. "thumbsup" Power seemed to be left in the batteries as well. :flipoff: Can't wait to go to the hills with it.

IMG_0343.JPG

That's the weight RTR for now. "thumbsup"

Tomorrow we are heading for some local gravel pits to test these rigs. Hopefully everything will go as planned, cause the season opener is just one week away now!

Time to get up and out! :flipoff:

P1010002.JPG

Thrilled to see this beast on the hill.

P1010005.JPG

So far so good! 8)

P1010006.JPG

This thing seems to be unstoppable. I gave it some really hard time out there to see the possible weak points.

P1010007.JPG

It seemed, that the batteries had also waited for the summer. :ror:

P1010008.JPG

In the whole half an hour bashing nothing broke. That's kind of a record for me!

P1010012.JPG

It still needs fine tuning on the suspension and steering, but all of those I can do next week.

P1010035.JPG

Both of my rigs were awesome today. Can't wait to start the season next weekend! 8)

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cSXX3i1C8AE?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Here is the first half of the battery on video! "thumbsup" As you can see, I gave it a little bit extra throttle here and there. :flipoff:

Next thing would be painting the body. After that some tuning and then it's ready for it's first comp!

What I don't get about these high voltage servo specs is that they rate it to 7.4v.

Mostly to not confuse people. 7.2/7.4V has been the standard for a 6-cell pack or 2S LiPo for a long time now. Believe it or not, it causes people confusion when you start using peaked pack voltages. The packs are rated at the nominal voltage so the servo specs followed suit.

Time to finish this rig for it's debyt comp!

IMG_0367.JPG

First layer of paint to the body.

IMG_0369.JPG

Second one.

IMG_0381.JPG

I made some changes to the rig itself after the first practise session. Roll bars from front and rear are now gone. They just don't work in environment like this.

IMG_0382.JPG

All that sand came off from the rig.

IMG_0383.JPG

Secured all the screws as well.

IMG_0385.JPG

Almost done!

IMG_0386.JPG

Third layer of paint drying.

IMG_0387.JPG

What the actual f***?!

IMG_0388.JPG

Oh dear god... I ruined it.

IMG_0389.JPG

Or?

IMG_0390.JPG

Did I?

IMG_0391.JPG

Probably yes. :flipoff::flipoff:

IMG_0392.JPG

The artist in me. :flipoff::flipoff::lmao:

IMG_0393.JPG

I'm pretty happy about it though. It wasn't supposed to be pretty. 8)

IMG_0394.JPG

Decals do a lot for this body.

IMG_0396.JPG

It's ready for the battle! There will be over ten rigs on the line so it'll be one hell of a fight! But I'm confident. "thumbsup"

FC%231_2015.gif

Let's have some fun shall we! ;-)

Pics and videos will follow. "thumbsup"

Wanderer's debut comp is now behind.

P1010013.JPG

That's a rispectful amount of rigs in the line. There hasn't been so many since 2010.

P1010023.JPG

All shapes of rollcages. 8)

P1010151.JPG

Course three waiting for Wanderer.

P1010154.JPG

Off we go!

P1010159.JPG

Rig seemed to be relatively easy to predict, which is helping a lot in driving. :)

P1010160.JPG

First two courses went well and rig managed to do nearly every gate.

P1010161.JPG

The bottom of the hill reached again. Time to go up!

P1010165.JPG

Clean performance so far! "thumbsup"

P1010169.JPG

Time to give it all for perfection.

P1010170.JPG

The reason why I've been driving foff ten years now. 8)

P1010294.JPG

And another perfect score with a nice flight! :ror:

P1010301.JPG

Wanderer takes off to the last course.

P1010302.JPG

Can't really say I'm dissapointed with the rig. It does everything that my old rig would've done. "thumbsup" Some parts even better.

P1010303.JPG

On the 200 point gate.

P1010304.JPG

Final effort to reach the top of the last course. Wasn't able to do that, but I'm still pleased with the result.

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/odCQnkaBuYU?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Here we have course five on video. This was really the decider for my success. Only one to make it to the top. With style! 8)

IMG_0415.JPG

Victory just ahead of my team mates. What a retard pic.... :ror:

Foff%20Cup%20Comp%201%20-%20S%e4kyl%e4.jpg

And finally the results. As you can see it really was a tight comp from start to finish. Can't except nothing more from the next comp after two weeks. "thumbsup"

Hopefully we'll get that many rigs on the line in there too. This was a really good way to start this rig's career and season! 8)

I'm ready for tomorrows Foff Cup #2!

IMG_0452.JPG

No changes after the first comp. I'll go there to learn new things about the rig. "thumbsup"

FC2015C2_640.jpg

"April Dust". There's fourteen rigs registered for unlimited class tomorrow. Should be a fight of a century! Doin my best and knowing this thing is a winner! ;-)

Comp number two is in the books!

P1010003%20(2).JPG

It was held in southern Finland last saturday.

P1010107.JPG

Thirteen rigs were due to start!

P1010108.JPG

I don't remember seeing this kind of fleet in ages! "thumbsup"

P1010195.JPG

First course.

P1010196.JPG

I got the advantage of driving in other rigs tire marks. It's like train rails. :ror:

P1010199.JPG

Up!

P1010200.JPG

The start of this course was easy.

P1010201.JPG

Down again! This thing really moves when you pull the throttle! :flipoff:

P1010203.JPG

Last two gates were really tough!

P1010204.JPG

Got just a little bit grip from the cliff, but the nose was already heading to wrong direction...

P1010205.JPG

Down again we go.

P1010259.JPG

Course three next.

P1010261.JPG

In this course the last gate was long vertical cliff. Couple of rigs in front of me did a huuuge 360 degrees in the air and landed on their tires on the top. I just wanted a clean performance to continue in the lead. "thumbsup"

P1010266.JPG

I'm slowly beginning to learn this rigs basic behaviour.

P1010274.JPG

Off we go to the last gate. FULL THROTTLE!

P1010275.JPG

There it is! Touched the white marked, but got myself to the top! 8)

P1010484.JPG

Course five. A big problem was the visibility for some reason on this course.

P1010487.JPG

And these tires don't even throw the sand like Proline Maxx Paddles.

P1010491.JPG

I almost made it to the top.

<iframe width="854" height="510" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0j3Er_0Tbsw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Here is my best performance of the day. From course three. Jump included! 8)

Foff%20Cup%20Comp%202%20-%20Kangasala.jpg

Besides all good perfomances, I had one bad which ruined my comp entirely. I rolled over at the first gates of the timed course. That means zero poitns from there. This is something that doesn't happen to me every day. Now it did and it was all because I was reling too much in the balance of the new rig. Well, shit happens and it left me with postition five.

After the comp I bashed with the car a bit and the motor got jammed. I'll have to see, what's the problem there, but I suspect it's the front bearing that has collapsed. There's good two weeks before the next comp, so I have plenty of time to order a spare. "thumbsup"

Have loved the pics you have posted on FB of these amazing rigs Samu. Would be great to get an F1 Off Road scene here. Great excuse to hit the beach."thumbsup"

Yep, just as I suspected...

IMG_0459.JPG

The front bearing of my motor is in one million and two pieces.

IMG_0461.JPG

Completely ruined.

IMG_0462.JPG

That is quite badly stuck there. Gotta find a way to remove it without braking the can.

IMG_0464.JPG

Inside of the bearing on the rotor.

For now, I'll order a new motor, which will be Castle Creations 2200kv motor. I'll fix this one and keep it as a spare. "thumbsup"

Motor update before the next battle! "thumbsup"

IMG_0501.JPG

My new Castle 1515 2200kv motor arrived just in time. "thumbsup"

IMG_0502.JPG

Slightly longer can. More torque in this beast! "thumbsup"

IMG_0504.JPG

Tested it out with 13t pinion. It doesn't go as fast, but the speed is plenty enough I think. But the better thing would be the low end torque which this motor offers. Interesting to see it on the hills. "thumbsup"

fc3_suonenjoki_640.jpg

Twleve rigs on the line in search for gold and glory! "thumbsup" Comp is on sunday and I'm ready for it. Bring it on! 8)
