Hi Guys,

I am building my first crawler. I though I will just ask it all in a single thread..

1] I need to buy radio rx and tx. I don`t want to go for a high end model like the pros as I am starting into crawling and looking for an economic option given by hobby king. How many channel radio should I go for? I plan to have lights, Diff lock unlock system, mechanical braking and no dig. What type of radio is good for crawling (Pistol type or the normal square box type? eager to hear on this one) I have this in mind what you all think? Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter w/ Module & 8ch Receiver (Mode 2) (v2 Firmware)

2] I have a fireball 55T motor for the crawler. So higher turn motors give more speed or do they give more torque? I need to select gearing and batteries based on this.

3] Some use 2S lipo some use 3S Lipo....Based on my motor what should I go for, 2S or 3S? I am more inclined to buy LiFePo4.

4] I plan to build a braking system that will use a micro servo that will actuate gripping a disk brake and hence no drag brake needed for me. So will the cheap esc that are sold on hobby king work for me? Speed Controllers>Under 20 Amp

I'd recommend reading up in the newbie section. A lot of these questions are answered and the process of reading will definitely teach you a lot about what you want to do.

1. Most people use a pistol radio but I know of at least one guy that uses the stick type.

You are going to want a few channels at least... maybe even 4.
I think you should look into the Hacked FlySky radio... it's up to 8 channels I think.
Products - OverkillRC

2. Higher turn = More Torque Less Speed.
Lower Turn = More Speed and Less Torque
(A 35 to 55 is good for crawling)

3. 2s or 3s depends on your esc.
If you get the Holmes Hobbies BR-XL esc, you can go up to 6s!

4. You may just want to use a drag brake.
For what you are describing, I don't think the esc has anything to do with it. You need a radio with enough channels to work the servo.

Here are some CAD pics of my crawler design.
I am still working on it.
I am also re designing the pumpkin.
Chassis width and length is gonna be changed to accumulate electronics.

Have you considered using Axial axles and transmission?

Not yet, but looking at reviews I am dam sure that axial products are really good.

For axles I want something in metal and that is why I am gonna cnc machine the axles out of aluminum.
I am gonna use the RC4WD tranny or else just design and machine the spur gears and gearbox myself.
Currently I am designing the 1:3 ratio bevel gear and diff lock unlock system in the differential.
