great job so far on the build "thumbsup" im looking into making it to ecc but need to workout travel arrangements first
 
Not to bash the claws but... I thought sedonas were best. Especially on the east coast?

The Sedonas are probably the "best all around tire" and will work in most situations. The Boss Claws will work in a lot of places too and especially well on high traction surfaces, but just like any tire including the Sedonas, they have their weaknesses.
 
have you figured out the slop problem you should pop the bearing out in the knuckles and see if the hole os oval shaped and not round and that might be the slop
 
The inner bearings are about as tight as they could be without becoming a part of the knuckle itself. The outer bearings slide in and out a little more easily than I would like, but the holes are most certainly round. I really think the only way to get rid of this slop completely is to have wider bearings, or have the bearings spaced further apart in the knuckle. Neither of these options are worth attempting.
 
Quick update with pics to follow. I tagged along with my wife on a work trip so I got to crawling three days in a row and on the third morning the HR transfer gear in the front axle let go. I just tore it down to find 8 of the 12 teeth missing. I have found 7 of them, but one is still hiding...it might be in the axle housing though.

Needless to say...RC4WD got a payment from me today!

Thats was a great video. I really like the BJv4 chassis'. I got a BWD wedge and Im not really happy with the rear of it so I think I might switch and this video is helping my decision. Im also sorry to hearabout your HR gear breakage. I just ordered RC4WD gears and Im glad I did cause I was wondering which would last longer between the two brands. Thanks for posting the video. James T.

Here's another small update. I picked up a Crawler Innovations servo guard finally so I installed it tonight after I finished cutting the comm, replacing the brushes, and regreasing the gears after replacing the broken transfer gear. I also decided to ditch my electronics tray that I had mounted to the front motor. It had been working well although It did seem like it placed a little bit of a bind in certain situations...really just me being picky. I pulled the electronics out and cleaned them up and checked the solder connections where the signal wires are attached. One wire was really close to coming loose so I desoldered all three on that board and cleaned up the attachment points before clipping the tips off and starting with fresh wire. Then I moved on to assembling everything in the tightest package I could in order to keep everything as far forward as possible. I also like having my plastic skid on the motor rather than the aluminum of the mount I had made.

I also started running 6 slugs in each wheel rather than 3 and I really like how it is performing now. Being lighter might make it do a few things easier, but the added weight makes it do just about everything easier.

Looks good man, I was going to make something like your motor mounted tray. I thought it might bind, so I just put everything as far forward on the chassis as possible. It seems to work fine that way.
 
If the tray you made was binding, it was probably rubbing somewhere, figure out where it was and clearance what's needed and it shouldn't bind. I liked the tray you made, sad to see it go. The truck looks good, and nice video, some neat crawling lines for sure, I like the dirt and grass mixed in, varying terrain makes for some interesting crawling, a little dirt on the tires or moisture from grass can really throw off traction, fighting it is fun.
 
The binding wasn't from the tray, but from the case of the rear most ESC hitting the chassis plates or nuts at the link mount positions. I may go back to it, or change it up a little. It's not hitting the scrap pile just yet. Thanks!

I think if I redid it, I would move both ESC's to the front and put the Rx at the back of the line. That would probably eliminate the rubbing. The ESC that was on the back was moving the most, relative to the chassis, as a result of being on the end of the tray.

If my front upper links were more similar to my rears I could probably put the ESC's back to back and stand them right behind the motor, but since my front uppers have so many bends I couldn't do that. I might try some new links...
 
Yeah, once my VP upper link mount shows I will have some room to work with. Got to check and make sure the links clear the chassis support, and if so its going to happen.
