Kaetwo's Tekin FX-R Review...

just wired up my third fxr after one of the first two smoked on me.the first one burned up because i believe i did not have a external bec wired in.well now i got the bec in and both fxr hooked up along with two jr 8711 servos everything seems to be working great after programing through hotwire, but i noticed some smoke comming from the brand new fxr recieved today.it was comming from in between the two battery post by the green circuit board where the post are soldered onto.my question is,is it possible that when i soldered the cap and wires on i used too much liquid flux and that is what im seeing, btw there is also a itty bitty spark between the battery post.the fxr is not hot to touch and the onboard temp is on the 1st led which is low.the fxr is working i believe just like it should but this smoke and spark is concerning me.if anybody could help that would be greatly appreciated.

two fxr on sep channels
two tekin 55t
two jr 8711 servos front and reer steer

I'm not even going to touch this disaster. I would call Tekin and talk with there customer support ;-)

its cool man just messing with ya, i was playing with it earlier and i didnt see any more smoke so maybe its ok.

somebody just posted that they change from FXR to the FXR-pro...and the weird start up with 35t and 3s was gone...is this true?? has team tekin had the same experience??

Ive been following this thread.... and im 99% solved on getting a Tekin FXR except for this one last issue. Which is with their 35t. Im also interested on their long awaited update if they have tweaked the esc to its near perfection. hehehe:):)

im thinkn of getn a fxr 35T combo for my scx10. But from what i read, the 35t has some start up issues with high voltage set up. According to Sir Kaetwo going for a higher turn motor solves the problem, but for me, i want the all around capability (crawl, bash, trail) of a 35t motor. I really hope Tekin has solved it with their recent update:) Tnx guys! Tekin, &, K2!!!
V. good thread by the way!

Interesting if it did...there are only three differences between the FXR and the FXR Pro:

No motor limit
Lower On resistance (0.0006 Ohms)
Larger case

As odd as it may be, perhaps the no motor limit allows the 35 turn to run smoother at low RPM?

From the sounds of it you've dodge a bullet. Solder flux is nice but I don't recomend it for soldering wires onto the posts. If someone was to get overzealous and it made it's way between to solder posts and solder was to find it's way there it could spell disaster(D I S P O O F T E R).

All jokes aside, we're working on the new software. We made a few changes and weren't happy with it. We've scoured the boards looking for "other" requests for adjustments. This will be dedicated crawler software.

Thanks for sticking with us, we certainly are sticking with you guys!

Has any one else noticed if thier FXR sparks when you plug it in to the Battery. It seems to work great, and it is not over heating. I have made sure that every thing else is off or unpluged. Just thought I would check if this is a problem I should be conserned about.

how about a way to eliminate the posts? I hate those things, otherwise I really like the FSR. There's been times when I could have used more holding power from the drag brakes, but as a whole the ESC seems to work well, even with the 3s and the Holmes Hobby 35T handwound motor.

I just purchased a FX-R for my 09 comp set up.

I'm running a couple of Hitec servos 5595 for steering and a 225 for dig function sounds like I will need to add a bec to avoid thermal shut downs if I read this thread correctly?

So I added the Castle Bec my question is on a Spektrum 3100 RX or any third channel for that matter the BEC RX plug goes into the RX battery spot. I removed the red wire on the ESC to RX I even used the JRH Deans pin trick I thing I'm done building time to charge up the radio.

This has been a great thread for information regarding the FX-R nice work Kaetwo. :D

nuub question: What concerns should I have about dumping a 45T, maybe even a 35t motor into my rig? I'm using an 8-pack nihm and the spektrum rx with the fxr.

Really?! The direct solder posts are great, you can wire the FX-R in any concievable manner...killer in my book, and one of the features that puts it ahead of other's I think "thumbsup"

As far as the drag, the FX-R has some of the strongest on the market. What's your rig weighing in at?

Well, finally got to install one of the Tekin FXR's. So far it is great. I did have to tune about 25% exp. into my DX3R to stop it from being so jumpy. But it seems to be doing great now. I am running the JPCustoms 35t Warrior-R's and the start up isn't bad. I can tell a little differance but its well worth it with the drag brake that you get with it. I am sure that will be eliminated when the new update gets out.

So far.....it looks like I will be running the Tekins in my comp rigs. "thumbsup"

I'd personally perfer wires instead of the posts because I was concerned about how much heat was getting absorbed from the soldering gun while waiting for the posts to get hot enough for the silver solder to flow. A wire would be really quick to solder and it could be easily insulated by shrink wrap. I know that the Tekin has a great drag brake, that's why I'm running them in my comp rig and the scaler. I wasted too much $$ last year with the novak garbage.

My comp rig weigns in at about 7lbs, that's with the double fatties full of bearings. I had a siuation last year where the course desended a really steep rock face, easily 50*, and the drag brake didn't hold the rig, but it did make the perfect, slow speed creep down the rock face. I couldn't have controlled it myself that well. My idea of the perfect drag brake would be more of a parking brake, all 4 tires would drag across the rocks as gravity pulls the rig towards the earth!

ive had my FXR since 11/08 for my 1st crawler the MRC, then the rockforce with two servos, and two drifters. i use it as a drop-in while waiting for ESC`s ordered for those toys and i never had a problem with it. darn FXR even outlasted a newer R1pro which i just got back from tekin.
the FXR IMO is one of the best esc`s from tekin and it helps that i use the hotwire to update this and my other esc`s. the FXR will now reside and stay on my axial "thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup"
