Everybody needs their own build thread right? I've wanted a D90 1:1 for years but since I can't seem to find one for less than 30k with less than 100k miles on it I'm going to build a scale version out of a 10.2 kit. I'm starting with a Raffee Co hard body that doesn't seem to fit the 10.2 chassis at all so it's going to be quite a bit of work.

The plan is to do a fancy version of the utilitarian D90 called the Kahn. They take a D90 add a body kit and deck out the interior. Making the D90 just a little tougher looking. It should work well for an RC since it will give me a lot more room for tires. I've narrowed it down to two color choices but I can't seem to find the right paint to match either one. Any body have any ideas on how to match these colors?

The first step was getting the wheelbase right. The kit 10.2 is 313MM long and the D90 body has a 275MM wheelbase so there is quite a bit of shortening to do. Luckily it all can all come out of the rear end and I won't have to mess with steering geometry. The top rear links were easy I just ordered another set of 56.5MM links, these are the ones used for steering. For the lowers I decided I'm going to need all the extra weight I can get down low and I ordered a set of custom brass front and rear links from D-links. They're still in the mail but they should be here next week. I had to swap the driveshaft as well with the shorter one from the parts tree to make it work.

As far as power goes I'm going to be using a Mamba X and a Holmes Hobbies Torquemaster Expert 540 35T.

Great start Jim!
The Raffee/kahn parts are gonna look great!
Keep us posted!

The mailman was good to me today and brought a bunch of parts. The brass links came in and now I've got a roller with the correct wheelbase.

I also got a package with the Kahn body kit, killer body mounts a metal front bumper and metal full cage with rack.

The cage is really nice and it only cost $20!

I got a few more parts in from Dbx, shortened rear shock hoops, floor board and metal hood hinges.

With the new shock hoops the body almost sits in the right place, there's just a little trimming of the interior panel to get it to sit right.

It was a ton of trial and error, I wanted to trim as little as possible. There are little plastic shavings everywhere, haha. The battery tray needed quite a bit cut off as well. I'll need to run a stubby battery to keep it all in the hood.

Thats starting to come together nicely.
Interesting to see you finding some of the same issues that i did. I also chopped a ton of plastic out of the interior and battery tray. Your shorter motor should fit better that mine did. I kept cutting and dremelling until the body sat on the frame rails, including cutting the seat bases and seats to get over the motor.

Luckily I only had to cut one little bit out of the inside of the seat rail and only one of the plastic pins holding it to the floor was chopped off so I feel like it's still fairly stable. I'm debating whether or not to box in the holes with some plastic so the interior is completely sealed. I've got the body sitting on the rails but I need to route all the wiring and make sure nothing else is in the way before I move on to paint. The ESC is in there nice and tight, there's not much room for wires.

Dbx, thanks for all the work designing the parts. They all fit perfectly, well worth the wait.

Dem faux toes are HUGE! :lmao:

The Kahn D90 is awesome and I want one. Nice start.

How much were those brass axle tubes?

Do you mean the tires? I haven't decided on wheels and tires yet, these are just the stock set. The brass links were about $20.

Haha I typed it phonetically faux toes (photos). They were huge, but now they're down to a normal size.

Oh I thought those were "beef tubes" when the photos were huge. Didn't realize they were links.

I'm interested to see how they hold up for you since brass is soft.

Ha, that makes more sense. Better too big than too small right? I'm planning on doing beef tubes too but I think you can only get them preinstalled in an axle housing for now.

Update on the Kahn build. I finally got the body to sit where I wanted it. I got a 3D printer for my birthday and so I designed and printed a little body lift kit to make it work how I want it to. I also integrated a spot for the ESC switch.

I also found a paint that matched the idea in my head pretty closely, it's a little bluer than I wanted but it's close enough. There are so many little parts in this kit... It takes forever to get everything painted. This is aster a week of me painting and sanding and painting and masking and painting again.

Work has been crazy the last few months but I finally got this truck finished up and running. I got to run the break-in down in southern Utah. The suspension need some serious tuning to get the body roll out but it crawls like a champ.
