Leo's Willy!

What model Tig are you using?

It's a Greenlet CT-416D. A cheepo one my dad found on the net. it doesn't have much for adjustments but it gets the job done

it is starting to look like a kick @ss rig the only thing different in my rig and your rig is the dents and scratches lol "thumbsup""thumbsup"

well that and the lack of paint, the exo, the springs, the axles...:lol::lol:

Well I've been slacking on the updates trying to get my other stuff ready for the upcoming comp so here is the progress.

I wanted to get the body mounted before i went any further so the first thing was to get the supports on

the rear ones were bent up from scrap aluminum and got a hole punched in them

DSCN0068.jpg

Then I punched some holes for the bolts to go through

DSCN0089-4.jpg

Then I glued the mounts to the rear panel

DSCN0092-4.jpg

the frame got holes drilled and tapped to complete the mount

DSCN0083.jpg

Up front I added some stiffener channels

DSCN0091-4.jpg

Cut access holes for the cage mounts

DSCN0090-3.jpg

then on the frame I drilled and tapped a hole in the front slider mount

DSCN0088-4.jpg

Then behind the front seats i added the taller mount. I ended up modifying the original ones I had done. they needed to be closer to the body.

DSCN0067.jpg

then they got welded to the frame

DSCN0084.jpg

with the cab mounts done I moved onto the suspension. I want to have this a roller for the comp next week to show it off.

I started the front spring monts by cutting a piece of square stock

DSCN0085-4.jpg

then I trimmed out the middle

DSCN0086-4.jpg

and ground it down

DSCN0087-4.jpg

next I found some scrap pieces and cut them down for the shackles

DSCN0093-4.jpg

I tacked the front mounts on and drilled a hole for the shackles then added the springs

DSCN0094-4.jpg

I used 1/4" wide spring material since i feel it better fits the scale of the truck.

the compression and extension is pretty good with a single leaf

DSCN0095-4.jpg

DSCN0096-3.jpg

It will eventually have a bunch more leafs once the truck is done and i have the full weight.

I also used fuel line for spring bushings. I never tried them before so we'll see how they work.

DSCN0097-4.jpg

Here it was finally sitting on it's own up front

DSCN0098-4.jpg

Of course i had to get a flex shot so I duck taped the axle to the springs just to get a feel for how it will work.

DSCN0099-4.jpg

Not to bad so far!

Now on to the rear

Leo requested a 1/4 elliptical rear so I started with the center mount for the lower control arms he provided

I bent up a piece of rod and got a feel for the position

DSCN0104-1.jpg

Then I cut some plates to mount the joints and tacked them to the rod

DSCN0105-1.jpg

DSCN0106.jpg

Then gave them a test fit

DSCN0107.jpg

I really like how they turned out. they will also get finished welded and ground down before they are permanently installed

for the springs I cut another piece of square stock to serve as the spring mount on the axle

DSCN0101-3.jpg

DSCN0102-1.jpg

For the chassis mount I cut some plates and drilled and tapped a series of holes.

DSCN0108.jpg

I slid the spring in to test it and find the position on the frame

DSCN0109.jpg

Then tacked them into place

DSCN0114.jpg

DSCN0111.jpg

Now i'll need a bunch more leafs to support the weight of the truck but at least I know it functions and it articulates really well

DSCN0110.jpg

DSCN0112.jpg

DSCN0113.jpg

Well that's it for now. I hope to have the cage started before the comp next weekend as well. the truck will be far from running but there is a couple people wanting to see it.

boy is this rig looking more and more killer "thumbsup""thumbsup"

Truly amazing work, can't wait to see it right before paint. For some reason I like the bare metal look,it shows off how skilled you are!"thumbsup"

Are you bringing this to Motorama I would love to see it in person. I'm going to be there but I'm not competing. I was thinking about racing my quad in arena cross but I'm to out of shape and that place is small. Anyway hopefully I can meet you I got some ideas i want to run by you for my scaler"thumbsup".

Leo, nice choice with that 1/4 elliptical rear. Never saw that done before. Do you have a name for this yet? How about "K.K.K, Killer Kowalski's Krawler"
And without a doubt nice work M.M.

Not before me...

My wife actually mentioned right before I painted my comp truck "That would be really sweet if you just polished the panels" I might be trying that sometime;)

you should make some of these they will help a ton when you add more leafs

We'll see how this works first. right now i'm past the limits of the shocks. as long as i stay within that i'm happy. One thing I don't like about those up front is that it allows the suspension to unload quickly on climbs. bad for driveshafts.

Yah, i'll have my whole fleet of trucks including one of my Demo trucks for everyone to see.

Now that is funny!:D

WOW. "thumbsup"

Thanks man!

Can we get some flex shots with the body on it?

I'll get some tomorrow. I got the leafs set up now and it's standing on it's own so i'll try to get some shots outside.

Bring the camera...they are a sight...the builds don't even give them justice...

Heck yeah I bet thats why i wanna see these things in person! Saterday can't get here soon enough.

Thanks! just wait until you see the comp truck. you'll beg me not to drag it over the rocks:twisted:

Well I finally got the motivation to get back onto this. My wife actually had to kick my but to get working on it.

Anyways I got a good bit done the last couple days.

First off I finished welding the lower control arm cross member and tacked it into place

DSCN0137.jpg

then I started on the cage

The cage will have cues from Poison spider customs cages so i started with the front hoop

DSCN0115.jpg

I had to dog leg the down bar just a bit to get the right position on the foot

DSCN0116.jpg

Then I bent up the halo

DSCN0117.jpg

Then tacked it into place

DSCN0118.jpg

Next came the bars behind the seats. These were a bit challenging. I wanted to mimic the angle of the front hoop and that came out pretty well

DSCN0122.jpg

but the tough part was getting the bar up past the inner fenders

DSCN0120.jpg

DSCN0121.jpg

they also taper in as the meet the halo which make for a tricky compound bend but it worked out ok

DSCN0124.jpg

next was the rear bars. I wanted to mount them in the tub so everything would remain removable so i whipped up some plates. One is tapped the other slips the screws through

DSCN0125.jpg

then I secured them to the tub sandwiching the body between them

DSCN0126.jpg

then I ran the bars from the halo to the mounting plates

DSCN0128.jpg

DSCN0138.jpg

then to support it I ran tubes from the chassis to the lower plate

DSCN0129.jpg

DSCN0130.jpg

then the last thing to go on was a few bars to finish the top

DSCN0136.jpg

Now I'm beat! I hope to get the rest of the cage tacked up tomorrow as well as the rear tire carrier.

Night!

good lord!!! this has to be the best Jeep Willys build i've seen.
