Maxxmasher's budget bomproof Wraith makeover

ok not the best in the world, but for bashing and thrashing and submersion i bought these from asiatees.com steering blocks, chubs , and lock-outs cost me about $50 posted. would definatley buy them again.

Just because I'm curious....what's up with using a shock as your drag link? Seems like that would make the steering quite mushy.

I want to know how those parts hold up. I had never heard of them before, and found them when I did a google shopping search. Their prices are pretty good, but I was wary since they were unknown to me. I also feared a long shipping time. I've had ebay Hong Kong parts take a month to get to me and I don't even know if I'll be at this address in a month......moving......rrrrrrrr!!!

I've been beating my Wraith very hard. Even by my standards. And nothing to report! Its all working and holding up just fine. I Will buy there stuff again for my SCX10 .

Just gotten back from multiple cartwheeling down rocky slope . Still all good. Actually quite shocked i haven't broke anything after such a beating. Will post pics of panel damage later.

Is your bottom steering link from them, also? Looks pretty good. I, too am curious about the shock on your steering link. I used an extra micro shock to have "hydraulic assist" on my micro scaler. I just extended the shock all the way and filled the body with super glue to keep it rigid.

Its actually a tlt shock i had spare, with some threaded bar inside to stop it compressing. Purely a cosmetic mod but definitely a favourite. No movement at all. Bottom steering link is a piece of crap from flea bay. Hate it with a passion.

I managed to have a driveshaft go south on Saturday Lantz and have decided to give the junfac ones a try as an alternative also. I was acting a little silly on 3s and it just couldn't take it any more. You better get out here before you head west, I got plenty of places to choose from now.

How ya liking the build so far, Mit?! I was gonna surprise you the next time we went crawling. Should have figured you'd see this thread eventually! I had to do something to keep up with your rocketship Wraith! Since you sold your AX-10, I may do the same and throw it's upgrades and the extra cash at this thing! You know how I am on a build; just can't stop 'till it's indestructible!! (No need to blab to wives about how much this is costing either!) :flipoff:
No work tomorrow, so I'll be up late working on this thing. More pics tomorrow.....

If it's purely cosmetic, the more proper way to do it would be to connect one end to the axle and the other end to the tie rod. Using it that way, you could actually make it useable to help cut down bumpsteer. I may have to look into something like that.

FInally got this thing about wrapped up. For now. Got my house sold and have been busy with work and making sure everything is perfect for my home inspection on Friday. Also started really filling my garage with stuff now that I don't have to keep it empty so morons can imagine how big a garage is. Anyways, here's the pics I promised.....

I got the ESC moved up to the front of the machine. Was a bit afraid it wouldn't fit with the battery there, but it's all good.

Starting to get the wiring tucked away.

Had to slightly move the VXL a bit to accomodate the battery plate. I was sitting the battery on the side, but after seeing others take out a piece of the frame, I did the same so I can lay the pack flat. The wires are not so mashed in there now.

I also wanted to move the receiver a bit and get rid of the extra stuff in the back. Just to be safe, I spread a bit of RTV silicone around the screw holes to make sure no water can possibly get in. I also put a gob of teflon grease on the wires and on the seal of the receiver box lid.

I also put the light control inside of a piece of a latex glove and put a glob of RTV in the end before tying a knot

Got all the wiring prettied and done

I was drinking a Rockstar while doing all this and I thought "Why not?" I needed something to cover the hole I cut in the lexan cover where my ESC used to stick out.

Almost done getting the interior in there. Just need the screws and the Sgt. at the wheel

I haven't had a chance to run it outdoors yet; busy with moving. Me and a buddy are gonna do some scaling on Friday, so we'll see. I did notice some slow speed stuttering, but it doesn't have to be perfect. The sheer speed makes up for being a super crawler!! (Just hope the drivelines can take it!)

The problem with the vxl system isn't so much the speed control, but the non sensored motor. That causes the low speed cogging from my understanding. If you ran a sensored motor it will crawl good except for the lack of drag brake, which some don't like for crawling either. Max and myself are big fans of our trucks taking a dip on occasion, and it definitely works for that. If you have no intentions of getting near water I'd say go mamba or tekin rs. I am a fan of the rs in mine, does everything I want.

Yeah, I knew there'd be some cogging, but the way we drive 'em, they're more submarine than comp crawler! You're worse than a little kid! If there's a mudpuddle to be found anywhere in the woods, your truck is sure to be getting wet. Woody's bringing his scalers over to play after work on Friday. We'll see how the reconstructed Wraith holds up...... We've gotta get together before I move!

Well I finally got a chance to get out and play with the Wraith a bit yesterday. VERY fast! Just a bit too fast. Even dialing things down a bit with my radio, the thing was just too twitchy on the rocks to really crawl very well. After a little cogging, it would take off like a rocket if I wasn't very careful. This ended up costing me a front axle when I got bound up a bit with the wheels turned. Twisted the axle shaft like a pretzel! Still had a great day running with my Brother in law (TGH117) and some guys from SVSC down at Sam Lewis state park. Awesome rocks, great guys, and a great time! Glad I had the SCX-10 along with me as a backup. Axial universal axle shafts are on the way and I am going to try a 27 turn motor to see how she runs on that. If that burns up, I think I'll be in contact with Holmes Hobbies for a proper motor. I also squeezed the water out of my foams from some previous creek running and took the weights out of my wheels. That should take a little pressure off everything. We'll see. I think I'll be heading back to Sam Lewis again this Saturday for some more play time.....

Unfortunately, the only pic I took of the Wraith in action and it was Tim's

Get your junk back together fast! I'm ready and I found the lost pin root cause so we are good.

Don't nag me about it :flipoff:;tell RPP!! Hopefully they are like last time and get the parts here quicker than the tracking says. The universals are due to arrive Saturday around 2pm. If it takes the same amount of time, I'll have them on Friday. Cross your fingers!! If not, at least the SCX will be ready. I got my rear body mounting problem addressed and my other seven cell pack is showing signs of life!!"thumbsup"

RPP Hobby came through again! I ordered a set of universal axles to replace the twisted one, and it got here this afternoon. A couple minutes of work, and my Wraith is ready to run once again. I opted to leave the VXL motor in there and instead played with some settings on my radio to limit the throttle response and overall power. Hopefully, things will hold together. My bro TGH117 will be here in the morning, and we'll be hitting Sam Lewis state park again. Hopefully this rain is done!!

Happiness is new parts just in time!

Not only will these axles give me better steering, but they are tougher as well.
