motors getting hot?

After just about 5 or 10 minutes of running my motors on my Emaxx crawler are over 200 degrees, according to my temp gun. I do not remember the exact grearing on the trans, but it was the biggest spur and smallest pinions I could buy at my LHS. After just a few minutes of running, it seems like the "punch" of the battery wears off. What the crawler would pull over at first, after just a few minutes, it will not. I seem to have pretty good run time, but the motors are getting hot and the crawler does not pull near as well after just a bit. I am running a receiver pack.

EMaxx crawler
55 turn Integy lathes
EVX

Ay ideas?

Overheating motors means that the gearing is too high, or the voltage is dropping so you're pulling more amps to get the same power.

Is the battery (or batteries) getting hot?

I am running a six cell side by side pack of GP3300SCHC cells. I have done the one battery mod to the EVX, the battery always stay cool to the touch, not even a bit warm.

Would more cells help? I am wanting to run 8 cells in a 4x4 side by side setup. Would the EVX handle this voltage with the one battery mod?

If the cells are staying cool, I wonder if you've either done something wrong with the battery mod (I've no experience of this mod), or you've got a mechanical bind somewhere.

Gearing is still the most likely - what's the wheel speed like when you run on a flat surface?
I've got an original eMaxx that I haven't used for years. I seem to remember that it was geared high for wheel speed. I'd think that you would need to gear down to at least double the original ratio, even with 55T motors.
I could be wrong because I've no experience of the eMaxx as a crawler.

The best I remember the spur is the biggest Emaxx spur and the pinions are the smallest that my LHS had in stock when I first built this thing. My speed is barely over a slow walk. I don't think gearing is an issue, could be wrong.

I wonder if it could be my driving style, when I get to an obstacle that it will not just crawl over, I mash the gas and hope for the best. Maybe I am expecting too much.

I am at a loss here, have no idea. I cannot find any binding, the gearing is low, batteries cool to the touch...

Is the esc getting hot.
and are you running a BEC

If your esc is getting hot and you dont have a BEC then there is no doubt, its the gearing.

You can work with the gearing, and install some heatsinks on your motor.

I don't have a BEC, but I am running an external receiver pack and have the red wire from the esc unplugged at the receiver.

The esc is still cool to th touch after running, the only thing heating up are the motors.

I would check your brushes and your comm for scoring, burning(read discoloration), or excessive wear. It may be time for some replacements brushes or armature, maybe even a new motor. Also make sure your brushes can move freely in the housing so it's not causing too much pressure on the comm.

You say it's at a fast walk speed, so your gearing should be fine. If your brushes and comm are fine as well I'd check for some binding somewhere.

Good luck
