Must watch video hd gear mod

Ran the YXL over the weekend pretty hard with my son. We had a ball. Ran it for about 45 min w/o any issues whatsoever.

Agreed. It is every YXL owners duty IMO when you see this at the bottom of PG1 to bump it.

"thumbsup" Thanks for the public service "thumbsup" Theirs more than one way to make it a "STICKY'" lol I think I should start a new thread that keeps it short, informative with specifications and assembly outlines..

BTW Guys My Youtube page has two "How- to -modify- HD Pinions" videos .

First HD Mod video ( starts at 2:27 )

That's a good idea. It took me a while to puzzle the pieces together, placing it all together is useful. You might want to consider editing your very first post, collect all the info there.

Looks like this mod is really worth doing. It's great that you take the time to share this with the community, it's much appreciated!

Oho it is Jason!!! Send me a set and I'll get them done for ya.. maybe afterwards you could help alert the XL community through your YouTube channel??

Right, it's me! "thumbsup"

I think I opened up this RCC account before I ever even thought of the YouTube channel, which is why the name is different.

That's a great idea to do a video about this mod, I'll go through this thread and make sure I understand how its done:mrgreen:

Sounds great I'll try to get you a clean cut factual briefing with specs.. long story short the shank of the pinion of the HD gear MUST be the same length as the original straight cut gear by removing the. ( No shims required) haunch of metal that forces the pinion into the ring gear..."thumbsup"
We appreciate the help spreading the word out to the XL community so they can enjoy their Rigs with their friends and family instead of the. "Axial walk of shame"

Those were also with pulling your little girl around too I believe. Regardless of how tiny she is the weight would put a huge amount of stress on the gears. Another testament to the mod
I have a video of giving a 2 yr old a ride on top of my Traxxas summit. It lasted for like 15 min. She loved it and the summit didn't seem to care.

I guess the testament is that the HD gears do not hold up stock.... these gears have had been put through hell fir 350+ runs. that no stock summit could inflict... 6s with ice screw racing/ 2wd 6s 20 tooth pin burnouts / multiple 65 lb kid pull session/ locked up crawling/rock bashing and rediclious pit bashing... I bash with a XMaxx daily... his is broken waiting for diffs lol
Also it's easier to ride with weight added than pulling 65 lbs across the ground and up hills..

Sorry. I was just laughing remembering do such a feat with an rc. I had just completed my pre-ordered yxl kit then. Guess what, it was broken in a few minutes of bashing at the lake. Very embarrassing for a 1200 plus dollar toy. I visited with Steve and cmbx10 plenty while trying to deal with Axial on the problems with this great money pit. After a ton of money and countless angry hours of wrenching, I gave up. I really wanted my losing 8ight 2.0 back. It was a blast to race and bash.

Anyhow I found RCC again as I decided to get into something less fast and big with the scx10.2. I'm still awaiting some great hardware from holmes hobbies.

While on my 10 hour drive to my grandma in laws funeral, I read this entire thread. I am excited to get the yeti out and maybe try to get her up and running again. I even fabled my own aluminum sheet metal skin for it. I loved the damn thing, it just made me so mad when it would break in just a few minutes of use after hours of work. Anyhow rant off and I'm super excited to start playing with it again. Wander if I can get Axial to donate some HD gears. I'll mod them and have a reliable rig again. Might even attempt 6s. There was no thought of 6s before with all of the grenades in the front and rear diffs.

Thank you again for the insight and I'm glad this thread was at the top because it saved this broken rc from the fire pit. My brothers rtr will benefit with this mod too.

I'll have to research some of the other mods listed here.

I forgot to ask, what all is required to make this thing a good 1/8th scale crawler?

Thank-you for the kind words man !
Silly putty in the diffs with a 12 tooth pinion/68 spur and plug-N-please lay with the Castle link ,drag break etc.
Then if it's you're thing ... BHB high clearance mod with extended CVDSs and erevo lower shock stems for more drop with the HC setup..
Honestly it's insane... I've been blown away with the performance... I did my wax mod in the front diff so I could use it for crawling or bashing ..

I've also installed a two speed transmission...it doubles the reduction which makes the top speed around 4-5 mph on 6s lmao!!!
I've sence opened my eyes up to sensored motors like my 1700kv T8 which makes me think the gear options are with a sensored motor and a 2speed...

So I'm actually running a viper vtx8 esc and viper 2100 motor. The thing is a beast. Like 220 amps of 6s blasting. Adjustable bec to 8.6v. All waterproof and aluminum construction. I'll have to look into the bhb high clearance mod. Where is the cheapest place to get some HD gears? All I have now are some standards.

Also your username reminds me of the show dexter...

Oh yeah it's a sensored setup. This thing is smooth as silk. So much better than my brothers rtr.

Well my standard gears just got shelled. Lasted all of about 3 hours on 4s. Gotta come up with these hd gears and do your mod. Now I remember why I hated this rig. I am really not excited to take the front end apart...Err actually put it together. I hate the design of the front end.

You can send them to me ... if you are doing it yourself...it just has to be the same length as the straight cut pinion..13.32mm from the inside groove of the c clip to the back of the teeth..

YXL is worth the extra time and money. Once you get everything dialed in you won't regret it...
We're getting ready to do a little night driving with our YXL. Kids are excited! Bought a ProLine LED light bar, made a JR to Deans adapter to power it using a lipo battery. Will mount the light bar underneath the roof of the body and battery will go inside that empty box below the spare wheel. Darn thing is so bright it lit up our entire front yard. Can't wait!

Can I send you mine? I haven't started my build yet but this looks like something that should be done and I am way too noobish to even try. Message me with details, I am happy to compensate you for your efforts.

I just finally got around to working on the YXL again after moving and building up an RR10 Bomber. I did this mod to my front pinion and it works flawlessly in the DHawk Builkhead. I'll post up once I get the whole truck back together. Why did they make getting to the front gears so difficult?

Now to get the entire front end back together so I can work on the rear axle.
