So I got to experience my first truck fire today. Turns out it's not too fun. I wanted to ask to see if anyone might be able to suggest a cause. I run an SCX-10 with 3s lipo a CC BEC and an FX-R. I took the FX-R and receiver (2.4gHz Futaba) apart and coated them with liquid electrical tape. They worked great. I tested them in a bowl of water, no problems. I installed them in the truck and they worked fine in a stream after being submerged a great deal. Later I was running in water that was muddy/sandy. The truck would glitch and not go now and then. It would sit still then start running suddenly. Anyhow, it started breathing white smoke and then small flames came from the ESC. I was able to get it out.
I am wondering if it was the liquid electrical tape. I feel that it worked fine for a good while with no problems. Is it possible that the motor was clogged and drew huge current? The motor was cool to the touch, so that seems unlikely. I also had 4 LEDs run to the receiver thru an old servo board like a pico switch. They weren't working right and were flickering... A short in the LED circuit wouldn't cause an ESC fire would it?
I'm just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what may have caused the fire... Thank you all.
