Got a SKS yesterday, a Norinco with a Tapco stock, 2 30 round mags and 2 10 round mags. Gun is clean and very fresh looking, shot it and it is well what I thought it would be. I want to do some more to it and was interested in what others had done to theirs. I plan on a scope mount, Install my foregrip handguard and remove the stock bayonet lug, maybe a flash hider, and then..... blank. I know little to nothing about goodies for an SKS. I do plan on getting some Tapco or ProMag 20 round clips, I've been told they were the least cranky, but other than that, I don't know what will work and what will not. I ask to you guys cause I know there are some here that are very gun savy. And who better to ask than those who have already tried."thumbsup"

Make sure you are 922r compliant

“Survivors” SKS FAQ

I got the Fieldsport SKS Recoil Buffer, the long muzzle brake, and SG Works bullpup stock. I havent had a chance to use it yet though :(

as stated above, make sure you dont loose your c&r status. The SKS is only allowed to be imported because its a relic and collector. Once you start removing things you run into a slippery slope where you have to have 7 (I think its 7) items made in the US.

If your over 5'8" you will prolly want a new stock to fit you better. Just don'ttry to turn it into an AR... To many people try to make an sks look all Tacticool, they are good just the way they come.

I think the sks is darn near perfect in original form with wood stock and internal magazine. they are robust and very reliable, and i like wood. Also, you'd be surprised how fast you can load one with stripper clips. Faster than you can change magazines.

Kylar, that list made my head hurt! lol! Don't know if it is compliant, I know it's Chinese, has a Tapco stock that is extendable, and is pistol grip, but not folding, and a bayonet lug, no bayonet, and detachable mags. I added a foregrip that is also a bipod. Besides the bipod grip, it is how I bought the rifle. I don't know what else I can do to it before it becomes illegal, or if it is already. But the list you posted suggested that there were 10 things before it was illegal? Would removing the bayonet lug be the straw that broke the camels back? would adding a muzzle brake be ok? or a flash suppressor? All I want is to make it an enjoyable shooter, with comfort. I can't do anything about the mags, it didn't have the fixed clip when I got it. It was looked over by a gun shop owner who said it was legal, but with what it has on it now, what else could I legally add?

you can add without making it illegal, you cannot remove. Certain things are "ok" to change such as a stock because they can be considered a repair. Other things start the slippery slope such as removing a grenade launcher to add a flash hider. Even changing internal parts like trigger springs count.

With that said, 99.9% of leo's don't have a clue about the laws. Since your not in Cali or Chicago, you are prolly safe but, why risk it. If you start modding it, use US made parts and go far enough to make it compliant again. Swap the trigger assembly for a nice smooth US one and that takes care of 5-6 parts. Then get a US made muzzle brake and go from there.

Once you change the stock you have to make sure the rest of the rifle is compliant. The SKS has 17 parts on the list, so you have to make sure you have 7 U.S Made parts on the rifle to bring it down to the magic 10. Removing the bayonet lug is fine as that is not one of the parts on the list. For the muzzle brake/flash hider, just get one that is made in the USA and is ok with your state laws. In Communisitcut we cant have evil flash hiders, where as i think they are legal in NC.

Here is the list

1 Receiver
2 Barrel
3 Bolt
4 Bolt carrier
5 Gas piston
6 trigger housing
7 Trigger
8 Hammer
9 Sear
10 Disconnector
11 Buttstock (US Made)
12 Forearm/Handguard (Removed)
13 Magazine body (US Made)
14 Follower (US Made)
15 Floor Plate (Only with replacement magazine with floor plate) (US Made)
16 Muzzle Device (Only if attached permanently or non-permanently to the SKS)* (US Made)
17 Pistol Grip (Only for stocks with a pistol grip) (US Made)

I put US Made next to the parts i switched out to make it compliant. The basic rule is you want to make sure you have no more then 10 foreign made parts on that list.

From the list it looks like you are ok, just make sure whatever muzzle device you get is made in the U.S

Here is a pic of mine :) Its the Norinco M Model with the 16" barrel, and it takes AK47 magazines so i dont have to worry about the adapted duck bill mags. "thumbsup"

That's just bad assed! Not wanting to go that route, but got to like the look! Thanks for clarifying things, makes it more better when you know what to do.
