New SSD Overdrive Gears

Ok, I ordered a set and received them on Monday. I put everything back together last night and the axle feels... lurchy? That's not a word, but it describes it pretty well. It feels like when you turn a motor by hand.

I have never rebuilt an axle, but this seems excessive. I can turn the axle by twisting the input shaft, but it isn't smooth at all. It's not crunchy or grindy. It just kind of binds for a split second and then lurches to the next bind. It is very odd.

I took everything apart and redid everything again to make sure. It feels decent without the diff cover installed, but as soon as i install the cover it goes right back to the weird lurchy feeling. I have taken it apart 4 different times and have tried 2 different kinds of grease. I did my standard small amount of grease which didn't help, and then i went ahead and packed it. Nothing changes.

Is this normal? Should i just throw it back under the truck and go? Or is there something wrong?

You're not alone. I installed a new set of SSD OD gears yesterday with less than stellar results. On initial assembly, gears were pretty much locked up tight. The pinion depth is too shallow (too close to the spool) so even shimming the carrier/ring gear as far away from the pinion as possible (I was able to shim it 0.2mm/0.008"), it's still tighter than I can rotate with my fingertips. I chucked the pinion up in my drill press and carefully ran a file on the backside of the pinion head (just enough to smooth out the ridges from machining, making it shiny) and it made a minor improvement, but it's still tighter than I like (feels notchy when fully assembled while rotating with my fingertips.) I might just run it like this and see if it beds in (I did spin it for a couple minutes with my cordless drill) otherwise I'll be taking more material off the back of the pinion. This is the first SSD product that I have NOT been satisfied with.

Here's another weird thing about it... In 1:1, mixing and matching pinions is a big no-no, since the pitch (if that's even the right word?) of a helical cut pinion gear of a given tooth count (in this case 8t )**is different, depending on the tooth count of the ring gear (like our 27t "overdive" vs stock 30t.) Since there's much less on the line with an rc car, I gave it a shot anyway and the stock Axial 8t pinion runs smoother with SSD's 27t ring gear than SSD's 8t pinion, still not what I would call smooth though. I don't know if it's just the few thou' extra on the back of the SSD pinion gear, or a proplem with the pitch of the pinion and/or ring gear, but it's still not right.
 
Thats unfortunate, I have a set on the way so I'll check back in with my feedback.

One thing (thats entirely conjecture) I have noticed is that a small handful of theads involve folks with crunchy diffs and it seem like a few of them used SSD housings. I didn't follow all of them to their resolutions but one was resolved by swapping housings. Again I'm entirely guessing but I wonder if the housing has anything to do with it?

Assembling the stock diff gears took some shimming for me to feel good about the fit, and they still seem a tiny bit on the crunchy side, not bad but not perfect.

In my experience switching to SSD housings from stock axial made the mesh better. Partially because of the separate, and metal, bearing retainers. Instead of relying on the diff cover to seat the bearings. But they all take some work/shimming.

I think LetterJ was installing his in a Capra, like I did, and I had the same issues. Just read on fb that the HR gears didn’t fit well in the Capra axle either.
 
That reminds me my Ascender had issues if I cranked the diff cover (a metal one) screws down tight so I would back them off just enough to maker the gears happy. What I imagine happening was the metal cover when tightened down was slightly warping the axle, at least enough to make the gears unhappy.

Again just more guesses and what if's so dont take me too seriously
 
I think your intuition is spot on here. I had to tighten, loosen, and repeat several times on the Capra front diff cover to get a driveable mesh. Certainly some type of contribution there.
 
Just installed mine in my OG Cherokee 10.2 kit axle cases with the red Diff covers..Did the loosen/tighten method as well.A healthy application of marine grease.They seem smooth enough to run.I can spin with my fingers but certainly not perfect.Will they they bed in I wonder?.Will test when I get my truck back together.

We did our testing in SSD housings so haven't noticed any problem. I will try it in the Axial housings and see if there is a slight tolerance issue between different housings.

Also, if you could, please test then in the Capra housings, as people seem to be wanting to possibly replace the stock gears work the SSD 6-bolt OD gears. Some have already tried, and run into the same problem. I'm interested...but holding off until I know for certain.

I read on FB that the HR gears didn’t have a good mesh in the Capra either. Leaning towards there being some slight difference in the Capra housing, but we shall see.
