Pham's VP Axial SCX-10 JK Jeep Wrangler Unlmited Rubicon - Unlimited Budget Project

I am some what new to this scale rc thing. This was one of the best posts I have read.

I see you went with the 4 link system. I have the 3 link set up now. Will I get more out of the truck going to the 4 link?

This is the best build I have seen. Great job.

I have a somewhat obscure question if you don't mind.

I am considering the Currie components, but I want to use them with leaf springs.

I think, from looking at lots of pictures, I can build a right angle bracket that would normally bolt to the shock/lower link mount to bolt the leaf springs too.

What I would like to know is, the additional holes in the top of the axle tubes, are they verticle/on the same plane as the shock/lower link mount surface. I hope that makes sense.

Cheers

I'm definitely a newbe to the scaler world and coming from srickly a MOA Berg setup sooooo are the two parts you listed in the 'Drivetrain' section of your part list (the Molded Drive Shaft VTR232021 & Driveshaft Yoke, Cup, & Hardware )truely the only parts used in the acutal drive shafts? It seems like the molded drive shaft VTR232021 is just an outer housing for a metal shaft that the yoke & cup would attach to. nYou mention one can use the MIP drive shafts but I did not read it as though you had them in this build. Plus according the MIP website, their SCX10 drive shafts will not fit the jeep Rubicon model. Clarification for this newbie is greatly appreciated. Again, breat build thread!

Another awesome contributing RCC member! Welcome! :flipoff:

Thanks for the thread Pham!

Thanks!

Thank you, the 4 link setup is how the VP Currie Axles are setup out of the package. One of the biggest benefit I have experienced going with a 4 link system is durability from a 3 link. That upper ball setup on the stock Axial would pop off over time with wear. I don't know the exact reason why a 4link would better for driving wise they seem to work both the same.

I do understand your question and I think it would work exactly like you stated. Where the shock and link mount is bolted you could just make a right angle bracket to bolt a leaf spring to. They are vertical when the pinion angle is parallel to the ground. If that's you're looking for then things would work out fine. Good luck on your build.

Part number VTR232021 is just a plastic slip type drive shaft that does just attached to the metal yoke. I don't know of any metal shaft setup for these drivelines. As for the MIP driveline the SCX-10 drive shaft should fit a Jeep Rubicon with no problem at all. The only thing that might need attention to is how they mount up to your transmission and drive pinion. The newer scx-10 parts have a screw shaft design where there's a hole and the older scx-10 stuff just have a flat spot for the grub screw to tighten against.

Hope this all make sense to everyone.

I have two questions for you about the OMF's, Pham.

The first question is, did you use anything to take up the slack in the wheel mount holes? For example, the hole in the stock axial wheel that the axle goes through to bolt the wheel down fits snug. The VP OMF is about double the size but the hex seems to keep it locked in place.

My second question is, did you use a longer screw to hold the spare tire on the back or a hex or anything? I can't seem to get mine to screw back on with the stock plastic wing nut.

Thanks for your help.

To your first question the VP OMF wheels bolt up the exact same way as the stock Axial wheel. The hole where the nut goes to tighten the wheel is just a lot deeper than the stock flush mount because of the offset of the 600 size hubs used.

To your second question I did use a longer screw to mount up the VP wheel on the stock spare mount but I also used a more shallow hub (475 size if I remember correctly) so the wheels wouldn't stick out so far on the mount.

Hopefully this answers your questions.

Your first two pics of the VP transmission on page 2 clearly shows spacer(s) being used between the VP housing and the VP motor plate. I received no such spacers in neither my VP transmission housing nor my VP gear guard/motor plate. Do you recall the size/part# for those spacers?
Thanks

It has been a while since I got to work on my Jeep with the Twin Hammers coming into the picture.

BUT I have got back to work so here it is:

Started off with finshing the transmission with VP housing, VP Gear Guard, Kimbrough 84t Spur Gear, Robinsion Racing 18t steel pinion gear, RR One Piece center gear, RR Steel Idler Gear, and it's coupled with a Tekin ROC 412 3100kv crawler motor. No plastic was used in the making of it :)

I hate the stock Axial hex because they screw into the shaft which could cause damage to the shaft and I noticed that there is some play after everything is installed. I decided to go with the Hot Racing Aluminum Clamping hex they fit very nice and there isn't any slop because they clamp onto the pin when tightened down & they don't damage the shaft. They are about 1mm thicker but that doesn't effect anything much.

Regarding the spacers between the VP trans housing and the VP motor plate ... I ended up cutting 3.6 mm spacers from a piece of alunimum tubing; works like a charm. Since these spacers are needed to mount the VP motor plate to the VP trans housing, I would of thought VP would of included them with one or the other ... IMO.

Running lights are the GT Power RC LED Light Kit = $23.99 they aren't on a speed controller, they are just powered by the BEC voltage.

This is such an amazing rig. I will definitely be following this thread, and borrowing a few ideas!

Thank You and please take as you need that's why I started this thread.

4K you could've put towards college tuition or something useful :ror:

I'm not sure if this is a sarcastic comment or not but what does 4k have anything to do with college or something useful. College cost a lot more than 4k (yes I have gone to college) and "something useful" doesn't make any sense since I have plenty of useful stuff.....

Never add it up, brother!

Almost everyone asks how much is in this rig when they see it so why not add it up to show I'm not lying or the list is very useful to know the cost of the next project someone may be building on a certain budget.

VP does include one of the spacer you need since it's not included with the transmission if you have an AX10 transmission. The parts you would need exactly would be three AXA1327 7.5x6 spacers or 4 if you want them all the same color like mine, AX30499 Transmission spacer, and last AX30499 Transmission Spacer 5x6.9x4.8mm.

Regarding the spacers between the VP trans housing and the VP motor plate ... I ended up cutting 3.6 mm spacers from a piece of alunimum tubing; works like a charm. Not sure how the 3.6 works but your spur gear is probably futher out than it should be. The reason why it's not included with the VP part is because all of the AX10 and old SCX10 that don't have the gear cover already include the items I posted above. Technically you should have these item in plastic because it comes with every kit and rtr I have owned but if you want the aluminum ones which I do recommend then get those parts. :) Hopefully this helps.

That helps a lot ... thanks for the clarification on the spacers. :)

As far as Krawlin01 comment about college tuition .... I can only hope it was said with sarcasm, lots of sarcasm.

Once again, great build and super build thread."thumbsup"

I just gotta say, this is the most badass SCX-10 I've seen!!!!! Everything is immaculate and so clean I could eat off it. Thanks for sharing this awesome rig with us!!

Awesome rig, Mr. Pham - question for you.

which GT Power kit are you using?? I've seen about 5 different version - and several of them are tagged as 'flashing' and I'd hate to get one of those and have issues

thanks!!
