Problems with your cut & shut tires??

There seems to be alot of people narrowing tires for rock crawling applications these days. I've seen everything from narrowed stock clod tires to the narrowed Jumbo kongs. I've been wondering if anyone out there has had any problem with their tires or wheel coming apart? Seems like everyone is enjoying cutting and shutting their tires with great results but nobody seems to mention if they've ever had any problems with tires splitting at the seam or wheels coming apart.

Has anyone ever spit their cut and shut tires durring rock crawling or other extreme abuse?

Since I completely finished my kongs, I've never had one single problem. Never even had to reglue a gap or anything. You just have to do it right.

Ive had one problem when i glued my side biters on 2 came off becasue i didnt use rubbing alchol on the tire first so it had oil on it so when you make them you need to clean the tire with alchiol really well or atleast that would give you the best hold

Sorry for sounding like a newb, but what exactly is the advantage of narrowing tires?

I think it works better because of a smaller contact patch gives us more contact pressure, thus more traction.
And they are easier to turn with.

I havn't tested yet, but I am shure they will be fine.
I just did what DirkDigler did basically, he seams to know a thing or two about that subject.

I had problems with my MGT's, but I didnt clean them first.
No problems with the Savage tires or Jumbo Swamp Dawgs. 8)

Well,I was gonna wait for Dirks tire review but couldn't take the pressure

. So I

raced down to my LHS and got a good deal on a new set of Kongs so I ordered. I got some CA glue,rubberised and regular thin and practiced on a junk tire. After a day of drying and a ton of poking,proding and pulling REALLY hard,I CANNOT get this practice tire apart. The amount of torture I have put my test tire through with my hands,there is no way I can reproduce this stress level by driving my truck so I guess this is a good thing. After seeing the results I'm not gonna even try the KONGS stock. I'll probly take an inch out of the width and try to get crazy with the tread.

Seeing how they will be new they should be clean,should I still rub them with alcohol?

Yes! Ever notice how dust sticks to new tires = oil. Oil is in the rubber the tires are molded from. There's also a good chance some sort of petroleum based releasing agent was used on the die the tires were molded in. Wipe 'em down, I bet you'll be able to pull some dirt off.:wink:

Nope, XtraCab pickup. I would like to find a solid axle 'Runna and swap all of my parts over. I need a back seat for the kiddies.
