I have to paint my Power Wagon body. The body will be straight forward, but I would love to hear how you guys are handling the bed with the wood floor and dividers. I'd like it "old school" with wood texture and chrome separating strips.

The options I have thought of are as follows:

Vinyl - I don't really want to go this route because it peels off and it's hard for me to cut cleanly.

Wood pieces - not really feeling that look since it ends up being raised up over the body.

Paint - I could brush on the paint, but how do I get darker paint in the wood grain? Is there some type of "wash" that you can paint over?

Any other ideas?

I dunno, I'd still go with really thin balsa wood and wood stain.... but then the wood might break.

You could also try cutting out lexan strips the size of the slats.... and vinyl them, or if you want to try painting wood patterns with a brush.... then glue them onto the bed.

Nope, Frank, haven't seen those. It looks good, but, as I stated, I don't want to use wood. Thanks for sharing though.

Wrapping Lexan strips is a great freaking idea! "thumbsup"

I'd still be interested in seeing if somebody knows how to get a "wash" or some other paint into the wood grain on the body and then paint over top of that with a lighter color.

You can just use two shades of brown with a brush. Brush the lexan strip with the darker brown making "grain" lines. When that dries... brush the lighter brown color over everything.

EDIT: I think I see what you're saying... Are you telling me the body itself has the grain indentations? If so, then do just what you said, but mask everything else off. Wash the darker color (diluted a little) into the grain, and then use a towel or cloth to wash off the excess (you may need paint thinner/remover). Then paint the lighter color on.

Yes, the body has wood grain molded into it. I'm not sure how deep it is though.

First you painting it inside or outside?
Depending on that maybe something like what is done in this video but with a wash instead of oil paint. Idk just throwing ideas out.
Warning: video is 20 min and guy kinda talks monotone.

I dont like the half depth bed of my PW so i have made a cover so i dont have to see it, and then i can still have a few things below the lid.

I have also painted my body now. lets just say the tamiya camel yellow,,, well its more of a orange if you ask me.
But i have sone nothing as to the bottom of the bed as it will rarely be seen unless some one open the hinged topper to reveal a few scale parts down there.
A few thing will also go on the top of my lid.

Yeah, I cut the wood flooring leftovers as thin as I could on the tablesaw (notice I didn't say "safely") and it still didn't look "right" installed due to the two dimensions.

I haven't seen a good wood-appearing Lexan job yet, so good luck with that. If I were to do it again and had to have wood, I'd do a drop bed and make it out of actual stained wood.

Accept no substitutes.

How bad do you want it to look good? Send it to Matt at MR Painting. I’m sure he could make it look amazing.

To and from shipping would add up to more than the cost of a new body though. If he would buy it and I'd only have to pay shipping one way I'd be more open to it.

My take on it.

I paint the inside of the body silver, then mask them off on the outside and paint the brown for the wood. Then hand paint the wood detail.

Nicely done, especially dig the weathering on that one - Hey, is that on a complete build of yours?

Don't remember seeing it before.... ;-)

Whipped up another one this weekend, but of a different look from the first one. Jato if you like this then I would be happy to offer some tips.
