ProTek 370-TBL Servo - My Experience

Hey all,

I just wanted to share my experiences with ProTek's new 370-TBL servo - hopefully I can help someone avoid the mistakes I've made...

Even though I've sent back the last two ProTek servos I tried within two weeks due to them failing, I was still seduced by the specs on this servo and the fact it's waterproof. I thought to myself "it's been a over a year since I tried a ProTek servo, maybe they've gotten better." I WAS WRONG!

Anyway, I decided to give the 370-TBL a try. I ordered one on 1/21/17 and received it a few days later. The servo was completely dead out of the box. I verified this by testing with a known good servo (a $22 Solar D772 that has been working flawlessly for over two years).

AMain was prompt to issue an RMA and I sent the servo back the next day. As I needed a servo for the weekend I ordered a second 370TBL and paid an additional $36.49 for UPS 2nd Day Air. My second 370TBL arrived last night (2/1/17). Upon installing it, it worked flawlessly for less than 30 seconds before it stopped - another servo totally dead. Again, I confirmed this using a known good servo. All of this happened on the bench with absolutely NO WEIGHT OR RESISTANCE on the servo.

I have tried both these servos in a Vaterra Ascender with a Holmes BRXL ECS and a Castle BEC set at 7.2v. The main power lead on the ESC has been disconnected going into the receiver so that only the ground and signal wires from the ESC connect to the receiver (as per Holmes and Castle instructions). I'm using a Spektrum DX3R Pro with a Spektrum SR3100 receiver.

All said, I've spent $356.46 for two servos in one week that COMBINED have a total of less than 30 seconds of trouble-free operation! The customer support I've received from AMain has been top-notch (as always) and I've had absolutely no issue getting an RMA issued to return both servos. Outside of this I've always enjoyed doing business with AMain, but I feel the ProTek brand of electronics reflects HORRIBLY on their overall great business.

Don't make the same mistake I did - STAY AWAY FROM PROTEK SERVOS!!! This servo is an absolute, unmitigated PIECE OF JUNK!!!

I also have a BNIB one. I'm not too worried though, Amain is great and I have been using Protek servos for years. Some of the best servos I have ever used. Sorry for your bad luck.

good to know.

A friend of mine runs high end Futaba & Airtronics, & never has issues $100-$200 servo.
I run BlueBird, Hobby King, & PowerHD, expect issues & rarely do $20-$40 servo.
The middle ground like ProTek & other expensive china servos is like paying extra for a warrantee that you may need.

You can chalk the 370TBL in with the high end category. Price is $150...

This friend of yours runs <$50 used airtronics servos....:flipoff:

I've owned probably around 10 protek servos I beat on a 150t and 170t in my yeti nailing a tree a few times and I've never had an issue.

Well sure if you are willing to invest in the $2.38 for that one new gear they are great... I don't know if $2 is worth it for a linkage snapping, truck twisting, reliable monster. :p

I just found this thread. I have a 370 in my TRX4, it was been used a good amount and probably about a year old. All the sudden it stopped self centering. I mean it does to an extent, but aft a light hit I find myself adjust ing the steering on my transmitter. Idk, I guess I thought it would have lasted longer for $160.
