Removing chrome from wheels

I'd like to remove the chrome from some wheels I purchased for my TLT.


Yes I searched and I found one thread pertaining to my question, but they all suggest easy off. I was wondering, would simple green work as well? Or is it going to damage the wheels?

I know that a 30 minute soaking in Simple Green quickly removes the chrome from Traxxas wheels :mrgreen:

plain 'ol fantastik cleaner works as well. soak them for about a half hour.

Bleach works well too! I use it on any static model parts I need dechromed.

Second that..... Castrol Super Clean (aka purple stuff) will remove chrome.

Hey... I read in RC Driver there is a product called "Greased Lightning" (i think) that works for removing anodized finishes, should work on the chrome. I need to remove some myself.

reading this again reminds me that I haven't done this yet! unbolting wheels as I type. (extremely difficult..)

Simple Green was ineffective. I looked around the house and found some easy off under the sink. it worked well, I didn't quite have enough for the method I used.


I should have set my wheels in a dish or something instead of on a piece of cardboard.


now I just need to find my Rit..

Just never, never use Goof Off. I tried this about 3 years ago with a bruiser body. It worked great until I accidently applied too heavy a concentration :roll:

I have some of that stuff myself in the garage, may have to try that. Never heard of it being used for that purpose before.

Seems to be the fastest way. Works great for removing anodizing as well.

I've used EZ-Off and Draino Max Gel to remove chrome (and paint from stock Clod bodies) and neither of them has hurt the plastic.

For the Draino Gel just put some into a small bowl, drop the wheel into the gel and let it sit for a few minutes then move on to the next wheel. (rinse the wheels with hot water)

The cool thing with the Draino Gel is that when you're done you can just dump it down the sink.

I just finished doing a set of 2.2 ofna rims with easy-off oven cleaner .... work like a charm no probs.

I just tried oven cleaner. It wasn't easy off and it was on some rpm rims. It did a pretty good job but there are some parts it wouldn't completely remove.

Any ideas? Just a crappy over cleaner?

castrol super clean, let sit, scrub with old toothbrush...should work fine.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use ezoff on HPI wheels. I remember reading awhile back on one of the forums that a guy tried using ezoff on his superstar wheels for 2.2 trucks and it literally ate the rim down to the outer hoop. There was nothing left spoke wise. I just dechromed all of my clodbuster pieces with ez off with no problem, now I just need to see what I should use for my TXT wheels.
