RJ's Leafed Ascender Build

I can't believe how much time I've spent on two mirrors. I think they turned out pretty good.

In this one you can see the Voodoo KLRs if you zoom in. These mirrors are HD, lol.

Do you mind me asking about those mirrors? I looked through the catalog on rc-crawler.it but didn't see them.

I'm putting together an Ascender kit myself and I was conceding I might have to scratch build a set - the Hilux mirrors are a bit small and the RC4WD Blazer mirrors are too big.

Are these specifically made for the blazer? Any chance I could get my hands on a set or two?

Thanks in advance

Did you get that mirror effect with bare metal foil or spray? Looks sweet.

They are stick on mirrors. 1mm thick. I put tape on the mirrored side then sanded the back to thin them out a little and then shaped them with a Dremel. If you try to use scissors they will crack. I got them at Walmart.

Well not a whole lot has changed. Still beating on the Ascender and it's been a great rig. Started working on an interior for another rig and it inspired me to put one in the K5. There is tons of room under the K5 shell. Only exterior changes that I currently have in the works is a 1979 K5 grill. Just wanted to be different.
The gauge inlay was the biggest challenge. I used scale hardware to hold it in place while the glue dried. Just need to clean up the glue mistakes and I'll be moving onto the door panels.

Wow, very nice love the keys with fob! 8)

Did you print that stuff yourself, or?
You guys are inspiring me to maybe do some interior work too, grill with round headlights is nice too! "thumbsup"

Glad to see this rig resurface. I'm having a blast building my full leaf spring custom forward motor ascender. I got the Delrin springs that are made for ascenders from Pepppe and love them so far but haven't driven the truck yet. I was looking through this whole thread and saw that your delrin springs have a perch made on them to adapt to the gcm leaf mounts. I made my own leaf mounts on another ascender and used tamiya leafs. Does Peppe make delrin replacements for tamiya springs or did you get them made elsewhere? Also, did you have to send him a metal spring for him to match it or does he already have them made up?

How did the motor forward mounts effect COG you think? I made my own custom one that puts the motor low, like between the framerails low because I like to be different but also both of those kits seem to raise the motor greatly from stock position. Just wondering about the handeling change. Keep up the good work!

I love this truck. I need to do a leaf spring Ascender.

Who made that dash, steering column, and keys?

Thanks Nate. Got everything from rc-crawler.it on FB. Sorry I know you don't do FB. The interior is a challenge mainly because I'm getting old and my eyes suck. I need to get some jewelers glasses, lol.

I just told Peppe what I wanted and he made it happen. I'm sure he's done Tamiya springs before. I don't use the perch anymore. I was just messing with ride heights. I don't like the motor up high but with as low as the truck rides it's not a huge deal. The biggest change was decending, a little light in the rear. I made a battery box that goes in the bed that I initially attached with Velcro so hI could test the battery in different positions. Honestly for scale trailing it's a beast but I have a ToyZukied Ascender that is super light that I use for the real crazy stuff. Thanks for the kind words.

I'm using the helpers from RC4WD. The piece underneath is a GCM part. So I guess I am using a perch just not the added spacers.

Decided I wanted a more stock look for the front so I added the SSD bumper and the interior details are still a work in progress. Dam iPhone 7 shows all my mistakes. I guess I need to start wearing my glasses. The simulated rolled down windows are hard to get perfect.

Wow upping your scale game, I like it! Opened windows turned out well, styrene grill, SSD bumpers, looking good! 8)

Edit; Really like the angled sheet steel bumpers too.

Thanks for the kind words Nate. The grill is 3D printed abs from rc-crawler.it.

Styrene crate doubles as a battery box. Access door is held in with magnets. Crate is held on with magnets so it can be removed easy to change out battery.

Man that skid tucks up in there nicely.

I see in this picture you're still using the upper links on the rear axle. How's that working out for you? I just got my truck done with the same leaf springs and have quite a bit of rear axle wrap especially on a steep climb. I'm not using a factory skid or aftermarket skid for that matter so getting the geometry might be tough for me. I'm just thinking of ideas to keep the axle wrap in check but not limit my flex or travel. I love my 4 leaf ascender so far. Just a few tuning tweaks still need to be done. Have you had any issues with the leaf springs durability wise? Are they starting to weaken or sag at all? How much use do you have on them? Thanks!
Ben
