Simple out-of-the-box upgrades?

I ruined my stock motor running through some wet sand and it screwed up the brushes. Now I've got a trinity 19t rebuildable motor now it tops out around 17 mph lol

it all depends how deep your pockets are.

i've got three and in somewhat this order seems to work for me

chassis flip
axle mounted servo
extended wheelbase (getting rid of the three link)
stronger servo
AL hubs and knuckles
stronger rear lockout (you can buy one, but i've had good success with some of the homebrew ones on here)
shocks - i haven't had a stock WK/CK shock not leak. I've run both revo and the longer big bores from traxxas, both with the shock cap mod with good success.

I usually use it like that for awhile until i get an itch and buy a real chassis and start all over. These are fun as heck for not too much money if you're willing to work a little, and it sounds like you know how to do that. Other than that, replace what breaks and search and when you find stuff you like, go for it.

Well looks like I don't have to worry about my little dude controlling this thing. It finally came in and I told him if he was a good boy we'd play with his new monster truck before bedtime...... He picked it up like he's been driving one of these things for a while!

Still going to install the rear locker, rear axle knuckle lockouts, relocate front steering servo, and get some 3000mah LiPos (my 5000mah's are just a tad too big)

Again, thanks for everyones help! I'm thinking of leaving this thing as-is after those few mods.... then maybe saving up for a different MT for "dad" so we can play at the same time. 8)

Thanks for the link!

Just a quick update. One of the biggest improvements was simply adding some 60wt oil to the rear shocks; it handles much better now "thumbsup"

I haven't relocated the steering servo yet. But now that the shocks are firmer I can definitely see that rear axle lockouts and stiffer steering are definitely much needed upgrades.... they'll be next.

One other thing that wasn't mentioned is the stock driveshafts are really weak. We found this out the hard way when my son ran into my 1:1 tire and popped the front driveshaft out:ror:. I was able to force it back in but it turned into a consistent thing. So we installed the HD axles 8)

I think I would leave out the locker personally and fill the diff with some heavy grease or what I like to use permatex type 2 gasket maker, so it has some play less likely to strip something than if bound up with a locker and with a locker will reduce his turn radius. my gripe about the wheely king was after I put in a bigger motor I was getting a slipping/chattering from the transmission, I believe was supposed to but it scared me. So I sold it :(

Thanks I was kind of leaning towards doing that too. I'll install the locker when my son gets older if he wants to do some climbing over obstacles in the woods.

My trans is making that noise too; i just havent taken it apart to see whats going on. Figured i stripped some gears.

They do some pinion gear mod back when i was looking there was one company making metal gears for it, but i didnt want to invest in a truck i wasnt in love with as i also thought it had a desperate need for some rear steering lockouts

For what it is worth, I cleaned all the grease out of my diffs and packed them as full as possible with silicone ear plugs. Definitely not a locker, but a surprisingly tough 'limited slip'. I am building a trail type rig, so it is perfect for what I am doing. At least so far.
