Suij's I'm on a budget rockfighter build.

I've noticed a few people seeming interested in my brushless outrunner swap recently so I'm attaching a copy of a recent PM I sent with my thoughts on the conversion and it's benefits and drawbacks.

Hi there,
Not all outrunners are the same size. There is huge a range of available out there. There are differences in can size and more importantly shaft size. I spent a lot of time reading any thread here on rcc with outrunner in the title. There is one thread in particular called " The outrunner tutorial thread" that I used as a basis for my decision to go with this setup.

I'm not sure doing as I did will give you the wheel speed your after. I think my rig may be slightly slower than the stock setup now, and that is on 3 cell lipo. If wheel speed is your main concern you may be better off just going to a 3 or even 4 cell capable brushed esc and sticking with the stock motors.

My main motivations for the change to brushless outrunners was for link and shock clearance. The fact I could do it more cheaply than a decent 540 brushed upgrade was also a factor. I have definitely made a sacrifice in bottom end smoothness and some wheel speed I believe. I'm not sure that it will suit everyone but for the price I had to try it.

I hope this helps out anyone thinking if doing the same to their rig.

Took the rig to its first comp in its current form. While I was pretty happy with how I drove there are defiantly a few shortcomings with the current motor/esc setup. Hoping I can sort out some of it with tuning on the esc's and transmitter settings.

Was too busy driving to get any photos. But made a couple of gates I didn't expect too. Ended up 4th of four pro class rigs but was only 10 points off second.

Unfortunately had this happen to the front spur gear at the end of the first course. Fixed with 2 part epoxy and it held up for 2 more courses before the same thing happened to both front and rear spurs. Luckily another rccrawler member has come up with fix using an alloy traxxas revo slipper clutch part that I will use to eliminate the issue for the future. I will post up the repair once I source the parts.

yes that will be interesting
since zno-rc stopped making their metal backing plate there has been no good solution
to this problem
thanaks suij

Well I got hold of a traxxas part number 5351 slipper clutch pressure plate and set about modifying it to replace the plastic spur gear plate that stripped out.

Here you can see the slipper plate with the spur shaft and pin installed. Next step was to grind down the ridges on the front of plate and cut it down to size.

Once smoothed off and cut to size I drilled some holes and bolted it to the spur gear. I also picked up some stock complete spur gear assemblies if this fails on me.

Hoping to get a chance to get back on the rocks to test it out soon.

dude, you guys are full of ideas, that is not a bad mod at all. and I don't think zno sells plates anymore or anything..... I dunno.
So basically cut or grind down to size, then drill holes to match and reattach everything.

nice dude, keep up the good work

for under 8.00 each that is a good find suij

just a little bit of grinding and drilling
lets see how well they work for you

very worth it I got some parts need to be replaced in the the axles now, I may order these up before I put it all back together. And red Loctite? for all the screws?

Had a small play in the rocks at the local park again. Got my son to take a small video of it tackling a small near vertical climb.
PRO RIG - YouTube
The repair to the spur using the traxxas slipper plate seems to holding up well. Planning on narrower wheels and dual stage foams as my next upgrades.
I'm off to work offshore for another month, but have packed a spare axle housing and some axial "C" hubs to play with, going to try and figure a way to get some caster on the front hubs to help with the steering. also planning on making up some better on axle shock mounts.

Comp rig! Way to go man. Great mod to the gear set. Seems weird there is no steel part for that on the market.

So it appears my upgrades to the spool didn't take the abuse. Got bound up couple of times then no front drive. Guess it's back to the drawing board to solve this. Will take the broken parts to work next week and see if I can whip up a 1 piece replacement for the locker plate and shaft.

When I got my plate from Zno, it was not on the website.
I emailed him and he sent them to me pretty quickly any way.
One thing you'll notice at Zno is that he doesn't stock anything,
but if you pm him, he will typically make it happen.
It is by far the best mod I have done. It used to be
a source of constant problems but the plate has been in so
long now with no problems, that I had forgotten I even had it
until I was looking at this thread.

how recently did u buy from zno, I was weary of buying from there, I would love to have that spur plate.

I'd like to get four of the ZNO plates if they are still available. I almost ordered the traxxas parts earlier this week to do this mod and now I'm glad that I didn't.

I just tried to PM zno on here to ask about these and the pm box is full so I can't do that. I think I'll try to make something using some washers and my welder and dremel to replace the plastic piece. I probably won't get around to starting this until at least Wednesday evening though with work , remodeling the kitchen and martial arts classes my rc time is kind of on the back :cry:burner.

good luck
i bought 2 of the plates about 3-4 months ago and he only had 1 left

if you want i can take pictures and measurments and you could look for a machinist
to make some for you.

i called them. they answered with a different name but when i asked about zno they transfered me no problem
maybe they will send you the blueprints to have them made.
im in for 2 more if you consider making them

Awesome build Suij, I'm having almost the same problem with my plates but the pin has been breaking before the plastic completely strips, it's just starting to go

Well after another failed comp attempt I'm retiring the old girl to strictly bashing. I stripped out the middle gear in the front axle on gate 1 of the first course. Will order a new gear set when I get around to it but I think I have lost the love for this rig. I will keep my eye on the classifieds for some berg axles I believe.
