Szczerba's 2012 Secret Agent'd 4.0 Berg

Re: Szczerba's 2012 Secret Agent'd Berg

Nice build thread Shane"thumbsup". I'm very surprised to see you try something new after how well your berg was already running:shock:. What are you gonna do with your old SS chassis? After seeing your truck the last time you were here, I had been contemplating rebuilding my berg with a SS chassis and rebuilding the XR10 with the Secret Agent. I'm very curious to get your thoughts on the new build once you've completed it.

Re: Szczerba's 2012 Secret Agent'd Berg

Wow that is came out great! Great job on the links for sure. "thumbsup"

Thanks. Glad they did work out cause at $8 a link, Titanium is kinda pricey. But worth it!

Looks awesome Shane! Nice work "thumbsup"

Thanks. More to come. Alot of Carbon Fiber and Titanium make it look good. :ror:

I usually change my chassis every 12 months or so. Cause usually the new chassis I buy has been out a while. Little different with this setup. The SS will stay in the shop for now. Like I said, I could tell a difference in 20 seconds. Kinda like when I get new set of foams from you! "thumbsup"

Forgot to post up the weight of the chassis and axles.

Re: Szczerba's 2012 Secret Agent'd Berg

I couldnt keep the RcBro's locker screws to stay tight.

Putting my Berg back together today I found three loose screws and one hole that was stripped out on my front RcBro locker. Rear is all tight. I put the stockers back in as well. If I would not have read your thread today I can't say that I would have even checked them. That is one set of screws that you should only have to assemble once. Thanks for the heads up.

Re: Szczerba's 2012 Secret Agent'd Berg

Here are the tires I will be using. Well, really the tires I have been using since Oct 2010  Ol' trusty Khaos-Rovers built by Crawler Innovations.
I believe these were one of the first 2 sets ever made. Still climbin' in 2012. They are a touch heavier than most 2.2 comp tires. This set does not have internal sanding either.

For Wheels, I use the Vanquish SLW V6's with Crawler Innovation's SLW wheel widners. They do add a touch more weight to the setup but I think the Khaos's work good on a 1.25" wheel.
C.I. Wheel Wideners for VP 2.2 Bead Locks
Run these on the outside up front and on the inside out back.
I have about 1oz wrapped around the front wheels. Just left them on from SS setup.

Foams are the soon to be released Crawler Innovation's Closed Cell Inner foams.

Please note, these are the original Closed cell inner set sent to me several months ago (mid to late summer). I did the bead trimming with a dremel and routing tool. :ror:
No reflection on what Eddie uses now to bevel the inners for bead seating.

Fronts have soft outers with medium outer tuning ring.
Rears have same inners with medium outers and firm outer tuning rings.

Re: Szczerba's 2012 Secret Agent'd Berg

Roller status. 4lbs and 12.6 oz.

Electonics are 2.2 oz, body will be about 2 oz, 2oz for a battery and knuckles weights.
So around the 5lb-5.5lb mark rtr I am assuming, depending on knuckle weight additions.
SS setup was 5lbs and 10 oz, with 3 rings of knuckle weights on each side.

Front of skid is right at 3" at max droop. I limited the shocks to arrive at this number for now.

Electronics are two "seasoned" Mamba Micro pro's, de-cased and shrink wrapped together.

Last 4 pictures are for front bias.
First picture is no extra weight. Just tires, axles and chassis.
Second and third picture I just throw the two base knuckle weights on and re-adjusted.
Last picture reminds you of where 6.25" is for the 50/50 reference.

All this can change with battery and electronics and body placement.

Thanks, Ryan.
Like I said these were the first set I was sent so they have some time on them now and I pretty much hacked them up with the router bit.
Guess that's part of the prototyping process. Eddie said I would need to cut them but I figured he had envisioned a cleaner result. And no reason for another new set, these are still working good.

This set of inners are for 5.5" tall tires.

Missed your post in between postings. Helhedded said he heard a weird noise the first time it happened last summer. Tore the axles apart the next day, after 3 courses, both lockers were loose. I swapped out the silver 3mm screws and put in some black 3mm screws. Different grades. Cleaned all the threads before install and loc tighted back in. Loose one comp later, 3 courses. I would have to tear the truck apart after every comp. I think it's the soft aluminum threads on the locker itself.

For what it's worth I have had great luck with those lockers ever since they first loosened up on me. I just made sure that those lockers had no dirt or grease in them when they were rebuilt. I used some high pressure auto brake cleaner. After that I blew them out with compressed air and reinstalled the bolts with a nice amount of blue loctite. I then let it dry overnight. I think it's very important that your axle grease doesn't come into contact with the wet loctite.

That is funny....I rebuilt my berg axles earlier this week and noticed the exact same thing. All of the screws were loose....not bad, but at least half a turn with the wrench. I loctited the shit out of them and put them back in. Now, this is probably the first time I have checked them in probably 9 months so not bad, but I was shocked to see both of them had every screw loose...

Re: Szczerba's 2012 Secret Agent'd Berg

Bias is looking good so far, definitely do a gearbox mount for the lipo, that will help a lot as well. My berg actually used to work better with the bigger 850 packs mounted there than when I ran smaller packs. You could easily drill and tap the case for a homemade plate, or of course guys like Rowdy, Dlux, and Big Ron have bolt on options. "thumbsup"

I did all that too. Cleaned em up and let everything dry overnight. Guess it's just my luck.

Glad you caught it before parts started breaking.

I am still deciding on battery placement. If I put the battery on a gearbox mount then the electronics will have to go in the chassis. I could put the battery on the front axle, opposite the servo but I'll need to check clearances. And then put the electronics on the case plate.
The second option is what I want to do but I'll have to lay the battery on the axle and see how it looks.
I am going to cut the rear extended skid portion of the chassis off and might bend that up for a axle mount.
And doing all of this, ill have to bend my uppers slightly, I am assuming but I can put Jato's on there and then trim down to fit the new bend lengths.

it will be hard to place the battery on the axle
but esc and bec on the axle , rec. above the front motor and battery right behind the motor should work great:mrgreen:

Good thinking. I might have to quit being lazy and re-group my electronics into a neater package up on the axle.

I am just used to seeing all the XR-10 guys with their batteries up front on the axle. I don't think it will work for a berg though. Just have to see. I'll get to it this weekend.

Re: Szczerba's 2012 Secret Agent'd Berg

Isn't your skid plate on backwards?

He got a skid on his back it's tards.

I was just thinking the same thing, I think we just found the secret.

Looks good to me. Won't be hangin' out there too much longer. I'll do some trimming.

I was going to try and get the battery and all the electronics on an axle mounted plate but failed. Not impossible but tired of staring at it for now. I need to start driving this truck. I got the battery up there. Can fit a TP 3S 850mah without binds.
ESC's and Rx are 2.2 oz, so I'll live with those on the chassis for now. I'll rewrap the ESC's to better cover the boards due to the metal chassis skid braces.
http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial-ax-10-scorpion/346637-szczerbas-ff-sz.html body on there for now. It's about 4 years old but still holding up. "thumbsup"

Still need to re-wrap ESC's, trim lower skid, mount up bug body and test for a comp in 7 days.

1oz weight in each front wheel.

5lbs 2.4 oz No knuckle weights or body/RTR
5lbs 4.6 oz No knuckles weights/RTR
5lbs 10.7 oz, with base knuckles/RTR
