Federal law...due to emissions and safety regulations. Once the vehicle is 25 years old (by production month/year) the feds no longer care. The vehicle importation buisness is very very sketchy...you have to go with a legit importer and make sure you have all your paper work (bond release, NHTSA, etc etc) is legit and not forged because that shit has happened too. A lot of people think just because a car has a title and is registered in a particular state that you are good to go.... WRONG. Feds can seize the vehicle at a moments notice, you either have to ship it back out of the country or it gets crushed. Anyone selling r34s, s15 and such claiming they are legal is full of SHIT. Some r33s are because they were motorex cars which was a company who bought skylines to wreck / crash test in order to become usa compliant with NHTSA/fed laws guidelines... Those cars will sell for upwards of a 100k currently in some situations.

As of now though, you can import r32s and s13 Silvias as long as they are 25 years old. Probably only good thing about being in NY is we have ports and nostalgic imports is right in the city about an hour from me and they are a reliable trust worthy importer. So when the time comes I'll be using them to get something nice. I almost bought and s13 last year but then found my Chevelle and the Chevelle was actually cheaper then the s13 so I went with that. Now that they hype is over because it's into the second year the cars are a lot more reasonable in price compared to last year

I got a great deal on an outback for my wife last year. (benefit of living so close to SIA and having family that works there) Now I can't wait to add a wrx to my lineup, oh well my pig of a Super Duty is great for now. All 10-12 mpg of it.
 
the jap spec cars arent illegal to own, per se, just not exactly legal to register.. most all the systems will meet standards we have here, but were never "tested" by the government agencys and certified as ok for our market. even being "untested", state to state there are loopholes to register just about everything. when i was at the motorcycle dealer, we helped a guy get a kawasaki mule (farm cart, kinda like the grand daddy to todays side-by-sides) legalized, and registered to drive on maryland streets.

This couldn't be more wrong... The car must be 25 years old or brought up to compliance. Being state legal doesn't mean shit... Without a bond release and the national high way traffic and safety paper work the car isn't federally legal.


The only exemptions would be "show and display" where a said car can be used 2500 miles a year and it will soon be of the 25 year age or if it's an actual race spec'd car which there are very very few of and then it can only be used for racing proposes.

Anything else imported isn't legally done... Doesn't mean you can get an R34 skyline or s15 Silvia through some shady ass port in Florida but the car will only ever be state titled and is federally illegal and can be seized and crushed and since it wasn't imported legally even when it hits 25 years of age it still isn't legal

Taken in '08 at CIN motorsports in Charlotte NC, R33 if I'm not mistaken, RSD with NC plates. Grey market car I suppose?

I'm not sure the details, but up here you can get a 99 r34. It will be more than 20 grand for a gtr though

Loopholes are key here, transport tags (along with street rod, and dealer tags) allow you to drive anything in md, and it's perfectly legal to own anything here. The only thing age of vehicles has to do with is if you're applying for a historic tag, which after all the p.o.s. Cars slipping through the system and back on the street is going to be harder to get a tag with.

Last grey market purchase I was involved in went through Arizona which at the time had the easiest mva to deal with, Vermont is also pretty lax on their requirements.

They're selling skylines here in America now. And plus they have dirty smog and dirty taggers everywhere. I met this lady at the liquor store who seen grease all over my hands and asked me if I was having issues, I told her yes she told me for $600 she can get me registered and smogged with the tag and everything. Turned out she worked at the DMV. Who knew. I did not go that route because in 2 years I would have to pay another $600 to smog it again and I want to, I'd rather just do it right
