I wanna be Dave
The biggest problem with this idea is that if you start doing it in the smaller clubs (say clubs with less than 20-30 people at every comp) than you will be too divided and there will be little to no competition in one of the two classes. This is an even worse thing for club growth.
Overall I think no matter what it is pretty much always going to end up the same way. People who aren't competitive are going to bitch about whatever the current situation is.
Compete to win, thats why it's a competition. Effort should be rewarded.
I disagree with you almost entirely.
Our club has done similiar, but not to the same extent as we still allow dig in our amateur class. We've just seperated into 2 classes; Amateur and Pro. Both classes run the same course, but with a handfull of gates throughout the course in which the amateurs and pros split up. Before this seperation, the less competitive and newer drivers were getting frustrated with the pro level courses. The way it is now, the pro drivers run the extremely difficult lines with less time and no 20 point carry rule, where the amateurs have a slightly easier yet still very challenging course, but have more time, and a 20 pt rule.
This has kept things more fun for the newer, less competitive and lower level drivers, while still allowing for a great challenge for our top level guys.
Just remember, everybody has to start somewhere. Many of this years amateurs will be next seasons pros. If we run people off when they're first starting with an elitest attitude, there will be nobody to continue this hobby.
